Call of Duty's new chat moderation AI sees major success: 43% drop in toxicity

Good thing we fought the TOXICITY in the chat of our murder game! Wouldnt want to hurt anyone's feewings when you're brutally gunning each other down and stabbing each other in the neck!

I'm sure its just a coincidence that negative reactions to Activision's decisions get picked up as "toxicity" and any players that are notably better pick up bans because of butthurt noobs. Total coincidence, I'm sure.

I managed to get 100% of toxicity off. NOT buying Activition & Ubisoft. They can police someone else!

I don't complain all the time. I do complain when people call me the N-word.
1. there is a MUTE button
2. if you're a functioning ADULT, over 18 years OLD (as the game is ADULT, as stated on the label) you will NOT be bothered by name calling
3. I'm not buying Activision products anymore. F that policing.

I don't like it. Judging by the infestation of political weirdos and activists in gaming, I have a good idea how wide the range of the banned topics and related words is. If you can make a word forbidden, why not use this
opportunity to make the world a bit "better", right?

I enjoyed "toxicity" in games back in the 90s and early 2000s. I met cool people thanks to it. Now we get banned for simple tea-bagging.

Gaming community is really weird lol.

All the obvious trash talkers are defending themselves really hard xD. Stepped on your toes much for being called out.

Not really, just everything turned in to rainbows in recent years & most people don't like it. Being toxic is fun part of online PvP.

What is a point playing PvP without able trash talk back to a loser who thought he is a hot s!?

Breaking News:
Another school shooting massacre. Shooter was COD player. His reason: he couldn't vent his frustration in-game.

What a rollercoaster this comment section is.

I personally don't regard a good and healthy dose of trashtalk toxicity. It makes any games my friends and family and I play, whether it's football, tennis, lately padel or our online addiction, Apex pivate matches, much more fun.

Telling each other to f*** off, commenting skill and aim to throw the other person off or laughing at some s**t they pulled is all fair game.

We don't call each other n****r, backseat game, yell at each other and tell one another to go kill himself or f*****g uninstall the game beacuse you're f*****g trash and so on. There's a line. A line that if you cross, had you been sitting next to me I'd smash your head into your monitor to teach you manners. I guess what I am saying is, not every kind of toxicity is acceptable. And there are some phrases said in specific ways, like "ky5" that have obviously passed the trashtalk line and should be slapped with the banhammer. And it is obvious even more so in team based games like Apex, Fortnite, Rocket League and the like. How is calling your teammates "F*****g garbage, blyat, suka yebanaya, uninstall, blyat!" trashtalk? Anyone who does that should get instantly banned from comms for 24 hours to go cool off.

Now I have no idea how nuanced BlizzAct's system really is and if it is doing a good job. We don't play CoD so I can't judge. But I just wanted to give my two cents on the matter and say that we are all probably on the same page here.

Yes, I agree that there are overly sensitive people out there, but saying, just get over it you snowflake, ain't gonna do anyone any good. Especially when some commenters here said that they don't use voice chat and mute people. Yeah, well, in team based like the ones I mentioned, so called good comms are a big part of success. And if you are playing ranked matches with random players, you need to keep your VOIP on and be ready to call out situations because if you get talking mates, the match becomes easier to win. So if anyone starts being overly hateful, screams at mates and says stupid s**t, I for one am all for banning his ***.

Man do I see a business opportunity for Riot Games (of League of Legends fame) to sell the biggest dataset of toxicity known to mankind to other studios to train LLMs on.

Disclaimer: This is not investment advice ;)

Going by the comments section there seems to be two types of people. Those aiming to play a game and have fun, and those that consider yelling at others to be fun / don't mind get yelled at.
I'd say AI profile player behavior and add a checkbox when searching for a game if you want to be grouped with the second type or not. For those that enjoy toxicity, their dose is upped - for those that don't... they get less of it. Win-win?
Hell, the toxic group can even come up with creative names for those that don't opt-in or go with the usual soy boy or something.

In Arthur Morgan's voice:

I like the way you think, boy! 😅

Some excellent points.

It's hard to say where a line should be drawn - most people have varying degrees of what is and isn't acceptable. In the end, the host of the sever gets to draw the line for us, whether you agree with them or not.

As for people, most folks that are 35 and older have grown up with a lot of personal face to face ability to talk with people because social media wasn't a thing back when we were kids. Sure, you have chat rooms coming into play with AOL in the early 90's, but the ones I ever went into were toxic by any means. It was a new thing that people found being drawn to because they could easily chat with something across the the country, even world, without needing to call them on a phone.

Then you have the age range from I'd say 25 to 34, they're brought up in a different time where they were being brought up on these new sites and starting to dip their toes into social media at a younger age. Where online VOIP started to take off for online games, but most of these people have learned some type of manners because they still did physically interact with other people.

Then you have a large swath of the gaming population 24-18 that only grew up with a lot social media impact, distancing themselves from any real physical contact with people. They're taught that it is okay to feel offended and that it is okay to just verbally lash out online. They also lack social skills that taught them to defuse a situation without resorting to anger or violence.

Then there are the minors, pubescents that squeal when they talk. They are unable to take any kind of accountability for their actions, blame everyone else, use every single nasty word when they talk online or post to make them sound tough.....

I don't have time for ignorant people. That's why I avoid online games, it's not just the vile crap spewing from many of the mouths, but also the griefing and cheating. I have better things to do with my time than to have to listen to babies cry.

It's obvious that some people are VERY upset over this. But they are the same people who got their knickers in a twist when they and their politics were called "weird" (what a horrible insult!!)!

And yet, they are very upset they can't hurl racial and misogynist abuse at others. Guess who are the snowflakes!

Words have power because people give them power. When you experience an emotion from someone calling you anything, it gives that person power over you. Rather than focus inwards on yourself to take away the power others have over you, you complain until someone else solves the problem for you. People are offended because they are weak and have no desire to become stronger.

That is as accurate of a way I can sum up the mix of emotions that cause my frustration on this issue.

That's just victim blaming. The problem isn't that I'm offended when someone calls me the N-word, the problem is that someone is calling me the N-word. That person shouldn't be allowed to keep playing with other people.

1. Muting doesn't solve the problem. That person is then free to keep being awful to others.

2. That's just false. Most adults are going to feel bad if someone is yelling slurs at them. You don't suddenly lose all emotion when you become an adult.

3. Great. You won't be missed. Buying a game doesn't give you the right to harass people.

You're right, you're the victim and the world should revolve around you.

Here is the thing, the world is a tough place and we are all victims of something. While people like you ate out complaining about small problems you have people like me who are out there trying to solve big problems. I go out everyday to work on bridges in skyscrapers so that have places to live and a way to get to work and I have listen to people complain about how hard it is to have strangers on the internet call them names.

If you can't handle trash talking in a videogame you are never going to make it in the real world.

People are weak and if the individual didn't get offended by a word then the offender wouldn't have a reason to say it.

You can do more than one thing. Solving big problems doesn't mean you have to ignore smaller problems.

But this is the part of small problems. People with a victim mentality create a feedback loop of those problems. You're feelings got hurt because of words and then you tell everyone how words hurt you? Well, now people are going to use words to hurt you now. You created your own problem by giving those people power over you and now you want other people to change the world around you to solve a very tiny problem that individual created.

People who worry about toxic behavior in videogames are going to have major issues when their parents die, need to get a job and pay rent.

I'm pretty sure you can't get auto banned without a report from a human.
I think it just makes bans from reports much faster.
Iirc I was going back and forth with someone when this first came out and nothing happened.

My dude, with all due respect, of course, you've got a very one-dimesional handle over this. I get what you are saying but ignoring the problem is not the way to go. Just because something is unimportant and irrelevant to you, doesn't mean it should be the same for everyone.

When playing an online game in my downtime the last thing I want to see is someone being a total p***k and ruining my game, either with the stunts he pulls on purpose or verbally. Not everyone has mastered their emotions and even if one has, he still has griefing and cheating that is rampant in online games. This is a never ending fight and I'm happy that new ways are being developed to tackle this problem. There are no simple solutions to such abstract and complex problems like online toxic behaviour in games. Trash talking is one thing, game disrupting toxicity is something else.

But people in your positions response to toxic behavior is to create a toxic society. Or, here is an idea, why don't we bring back dedicated servers so people can create their own servers with their own rules?
