Can a hard shutdown cause damage?

Ok, I bring this up because I've seen the worse case scenario but more recently how is the best way to shut a pc down when the monitor dies? Power off button or pull the plug?

Even with the monitor off or dead you can still shut down Windows with the keyboard. That happens to be my preferred method anyway. Just learn the keystrokes for your version. I think it's usually just three.

No? Okay, for Windows 7, for example, hit the Start key, then the Right Arrow key and then the Enter key.
