Causes of audio/video buffering

I use both a Mac and a PC desktop operating on the same internet network. While watching a video stream or listening to an audio stream on iTunes, both audio and video streams stop playback because of buffering. Can anyone tell me what causes the buffering problem? Is it the lack of RAM; Processor speed; internet connection speed; or another factor? Are there any alternative steps I van perform, i.e. "Let the complete stream load before attempting playback?

It's not really a buffering problem per se. Your connection is not fast enough to keep up. If you let the complete stream download first, that would be a good solution. You probably don't have to let the whole thing download before you can start the video though.
