Eddie, thanks for your info on the Bronx, it's not alone as regards getting worse, most towns & cities in the U.K., are in a worse state than they were five years ago, crime wise etc.
As you can see below, I did some investigation about the Bronx, I entered "bronx" on Google & went to various websites on their list, unemployment in the Bronx seems the highest in the New York area, & at over a million population, it's BIG!
I hope you don't mind me looking at your area statistics, 'spect you well know that they're not that good, [that's NOT a criticism, just an observation] but it's your home, & that's what counts, & at least you don't have far to go to get to school, which is good for your safety.
Can I say that you seem very well brought up, other U.S. youngsters on the Techspot site are not so polite to an old guy like me, my late wife & I couldn't have children, & although I'm in my 70's, I have a young mind, & always have a good rapport with the younger generation
A friendly word of caution, TS doesn't encourage chat on forums, I have been admonished before, by one of their administrators, because I, & two others went on for a few days talking about irrelevant things, I'd like to chat more about our lives, perhaps we could do it, using the private messages facility, if that's OK with you, we could learn quite a lot about each other, our lives, background etc, & it might even be useful at your school, for a project?
Talk later, Maurice. [read on]

Demographics
The following statistics were gathered from various sites to highlight effects of the cycle of poverty within the South Bronx.
Hundreds of studies and millions of dollars spent on community programs have failed to alleviate poverty in communities like the South Bronx. On the contrary, in some cases community programs have instead increased poverty for the local residents. The question remains: Who is in charge of what, and where do we begin in order to alleviate the negligence prevelant in our neighborhoods? Who will step forward to end the vicious cycle of poverty? The reality is that as residents of these communities, it is our responsibility to step forward and take part in the development process if we want to see positive change take place.
