Cyberpunk 2077 expansion pack is not compatible with PS4 or Xbox One

Something to look forward to: The first "DLC" for CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 was a big letdown consisting of just a few cosmetic changes and very little new content. Fortunately, CDPR has been working on a true expansion pack and finally released a few details and a teaser for it today.

As we previously reported, Cyberpunk2077's first story expansion is still a ways away, slated for sometime next year. However, that is the total of what we knew about the upcoming content drop — until now.

On Monday, CD Projekt Red released a one-minute teaser for Cyberpunk 2077's first narrative-driven add-on, Phantom Liberty (above). The teaser's visuals are primarily cinematic, with brief glimpses of gameplay. However, it doesn't reveal much of the storyline. About all we get is V taking an oath to serve "the New United States of America," something Johnny Silverhand says is a "bad idea," dubbed over some action sequences.

One scene shows what appears to be several augmented Secret Service agents lying dead on and around the Seal of the President of the United States of America — perhaps in Airforce One, but it's hard to tell.

The light-on-deets YouTube description says Phantom Liberty is "a spy-thriller expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 set in an all-new district of Night City." So players get a new story and missions plus a whole unexplored section of the map.

Phantom Liberty will only be available for PS5, XBSX, PC, and Stadia. Notably, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles are absent from the listing on the trailer — a fact that CDPR failed to mention when it first revealed the add-on in April. However, this should not come as a huge shock.

On release, CP2077 was mostly an unplayable "dumpster fire" on last-generation consoles. The studio worked hard to push patches to at least make PS4 and Xbone versions passable, but the increased work and risk of failure of a last-gen compatible DLC might not be worth the studio's effort.

The game's first expansion pack is already facing a more than two years post-release launch window. Ditching the complication of making a bug-free version for older consoles is probably in CDPR's best interest, especially considering that one last-gen update to the core game bricked it on those unfortunate to have the PS4 disc version.

Permalink to story.

How did they manage to build a game for consoles, on an engine meant to run on said consoles, and bungle it so badly? Like, you guys were designing for the PS4 for literal YEARS and you never figured the performance would be an issue?

It was built for last gen consoles. It released less then a month after the PS5 and started development in 2015. There is 0 reason it shouldnt have worked other then dev incompetence.

Was it really, though? From the looks of it, the PC was pretty clearly the lead platform. It's tough to guess exactly where this went but I remember hearing scuttlebutt that the PS5 and Xbox Series "versions" (PS4 and Xbone in back-compat mode) were getting more love than the outright native PS4 and Xbone implementations right up to the wire. It's hard to say exactly where it went awry necessarily but it's pretty obvious the game needed NVMe throughput and more CPU horsepower, neither of which last gen was equipped to handle.

Nobody should be surprised there. That game was never meant to come out on those consoles. I don't know what they were thinking.

It never should've released on last gen consoles. At all.
Everytime I hear this kind of comment, I cringe. Look, this game was made when the PS4 and Xbox One and their equivalent level PCs were the intended platforms to run this game. Later gen consoles were not even born yet.

Those CDRP people got too excited with newer tech that they almost didn't care the platforms they initially based their game on.

Next time you people start saying this, think again. These were the original intended platforms for CP2077.

Sigh.

Cringe all you want, it's still the truth.

Feature creep and overambition got the better of them. A more competent management team would've either A) reined things in to make the game work on every platform or B) left last-gen consoles behind to fully accommodate the project's actual scope. Instead, they tried to have their cake and eat it too--and it didn't work.

When they started development and what consoles they originally targeted are both irrelevant in light of that. The game they actually put out wasn't going to work on the old hardware.

Building a game for a console that wont run on said console because your team cant keep their ambitions under control doesnt mean a game shouldnt run on said console, it means your teams management is garbage and someone needed to learn how to say the word "no".

There's also the slight issue that GTA V hade a livelier world with more features and interaction....on the xbox 360. And the witcher 3 had a bigger world, running far better, on the same game engine, on the same consoles as CP2077

The consoles are not the issue here, the incompetent dev team is the problem. Disagree all you want, its the truth.

Bro you're comparing apples and oranges here. The density in CP is on another level to ANY game out there. It's all in first person too which means the textures and everything have to be that much more detailed. Last gen consoles clearly can't do it.

Thank god, old gen conslowles are a ball and chain for PCs, especially because said crap boxes have an extremely slow drive. Conslowle players were f!cked over very hard with said hdd.
