Dell A490 printer printing too light

My Dell A940 is printing really light and patchy. Tried re-positioning the encoder strip and turning it upside down but to no avail... Have not found anything useful at dell.com. Anyone got a suggestion? Thanks

Have you checked your cartridge ink levels?

yes ink levels are fine. I just tried cleaning the encoder strip but that didn't help.

You can try reseating the cartridges, but also try reinstalling the printer. If it still continues after that it's possible that there are some hardware problems with the printer, but that will have to be determined buy your supplier.

Thanks, have re-seated cartridges. Will also try re-installing printer.
