Disappointing Battlefield V sales and declining mobile business see EA's shares plummet

What just happened? Electronic Arts' share price has tumbled after the gaming giant revealed a disappointing third fiscal quarter. Lower than anticipated sales of Battlefield V and falling revenue in its mobile-gaming division were blamed for Q3 2019 failing to meet expectations

While Battlefield V was the flagship game for showing off the real-time ray tracing features of Nvidia's RTX cards, the latest entry in the franchise didn’t perform as well as hoped. EA’s COO and CFO, Blake Jorgensen, said 7.3 million copies had sold worldwide to date. That might sound like a lot, but it’s still one million fewer than EA was anticipating. Additionally, it didn’t help bring in as many Origin Access Premier subscribers as expected.

Jorgensen said Battlefield V missed targets due to it lacking a battle royale mode at launch. Thanks mostly to Fortnite, the genre is incredibly popular right now, but BFV’s mode, called Firestorm, won’t be here until next month. Delaying the game’s release until November 20, putting it up against Red Dead Redemption 2 and COD: Black Ops 4, also had a detrimental effect.

EA’s mobile business disappointed, too, recording a 23 percent year-on-year decline. This was blamed on the slow uptake on Command and Conquer Rivals, the delay of an unnamed game (probably Star Wars: Rise to Power), and "changes to broaden Madden Mobile's appeal" that failed to improve monetization.

EA recorded a total net revenue of $1.289 billion for Q3, but had been looking for $1.375 billion. The results saw its shares fall as low as $74.71 in late trading. The company has now lowered its outlook for revenue during this quarter, despite the initial popularity of Apex Legends, which gained one million players in under eight hours following its launch, and the upcoming release of Anthem.

There are a lot of reasons for this. People are hesitant on buying anything involving EA due to their many screwups. Battlefield has a set formula which every game adopts and so every Battlefield game is almost the same as all others with different scene setting, this one's WWII. Naturally, people will get bored of it. BR mode would help but I don't think it would save the game.

Having a game that runs like dog crap on anything other than a $2500 PC doesn't help either.

Don't bother with it unless you have at least a 4c/8t CPU, preferably 6c/12t...
I can understand the 6c/12t part but I can't agree on the $2500 PC when AMD Ryzen has delivered that kind of processor and platform for cheaper than it's ever been. You no longer have to pay the Intel tax, AMD has set you free.

Honestly, BFV is a great game. Fans were so caught up on the reveal trailer with women and artificial limbs. As someone who only plays multiplayer...I seriously don't recall seeing a single woman in the game. This era of Internet outrage and Twitter "canceling" has been so pathetic. BFV offering up all of its maps for free and deals to buy the game for $30...it's a no brainier purchase.

Side note, BF is great for Conquest & Grand Operations...Battle Royale can stay in Fortnite.

What!? I run BFV at 1440p Ultra settinggs with no issue...my system is a Core i5-2500K (from 2011!) and a GTX 1070.

"Jorgensen said Battlefield V missed targets due to it lacking a battle royale mode at launch"

Yup, that's the only reason. Clearly "Don't like it, don't buy it" had zero to do with people not buying it... :D
Hard to tell if you like it or not until after you've bought it though....

They did a free demo/beta. It was very 'meh'. I was going to wait for a sale, then I saw the loot system and decided to pass on it.

Notice how he didn't mention anything about the People PLAYING them game, only how many People bought the game. (Less than half play.)

Secondly, nobody who is playing BFV right now is playing legit.
Everybody (even old clans) are just partaking in the global cheatfest, & just trolling DICE/EA, because there is ZERO anti-cheat. So the sentiment over there is; "if can't beat them, join them" is in full swing at Origin.

Does anybody care if they loose their Origin account? Cheat away folks..

Yeah and with a ryzen at 4,2ghz on this game you cant even max out on a 144hz monitor due to cpu bottleneck

Do you work for dice? Lol you love bf v so much and you barely found women? Ok. Legit.

Who cares about those extremely high frame rates? I certainly don't. Oh sure, it's nice when it comes to benchmarks but anything above 100 FPS is wasted upon the average player. Better to get a good monitor with Freesync/GSync and be happy.

Article is missing where EA also admitted poor marketing was also an issue. The hate started immediately after the initial trailer.
https://variety.com/2019/gaming/new...delay-for-low-battlefield-5-sales-1203129986/

Other issues include:
Delayed launch.
Launching after RDR2 and BLOPs 4.
No rental servers (may not ever come).
Bugs.
Weak medic guns (SMGs only).
No drag mechanic (may not ever come).
Player visibility.
Long wait times after quitting a game.
Poor UI.
Not enough Company Coins being awarded.

Ray tracing was not a deciding factor in the gaming community. We just wanted a BF that was better than BF1. Many gamers wanted a modern BF instead of another world war themed shooter. I am one of those ppl.

BFV is a good game, but it could have been better at launch.

Oh look! Another "human eye dont need more than <insert number of frames or hz or gigabytes of ram here>" kind of guy! I thought those were gone in 2019, seems I was wrong.

No, it's because really high frame rates tend to make me sick. 100 FPS is about as much as I can handle without the urge to throw up.

Stop whinning. Cheating isn't that bad in this game. Want to see real cheating just go play Pubg, you will be crying before you finish the game.
