Disney has received conditional Department of Justice approval to acquire 21st Century Fox

Comcast and Disney have been locked in a fierce bidding war lately, with both corporate giants attempting to purchase 21st Century Fox.

If a deal were to go through, the purchaser would acquire Fox's entertainment networks, but not their news or business networks. Disney was the first to pursue Fox with a $52.4 billion, all-stock offer.

Comcast was quick to get in on the action, though. In May, the company announced that they were in the "advanced stages" of preparing an offer to top Disney's Fox bid. Comcast's offer was all-cash and would have been "at least as favorable" to Fox's shareholders as Disney's offer at around $60 billion.

Unfortunately for Comcast, Disney may have just won the battle. As reported by Ars Technica, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has approved Disney's Fox purchase, on the condition that Disney sells off Fox's regional sports networks. The DOJ hopes this will prevent Disney from becoming an entertainment monopoly.

This purchase approval certainly throws a wrench into Comcast's plans, but the writing was on the wall. The DOJ was much less likely to approve a Comcast-Fox merger, which the latter was well aware of. This led to a certain degree of reluctance when Comcast made their official offer.

To be clear, the deal isn't set in stone yet. It's possible that Disney or Fox's shareholder could reject the deal, potentially paving the way for Comcast to send Fox another, more enticing offer.

Alright Mouseketeers , it's time to sing...."Em -Eye- Cee-Key-EE-Why.....Em-Oh-You-Es-EE". "Mickey Mouse, he's a louse".

"Forever may his perennially copyrighted mouse a** rule the world"...

Disney's been in control of our government for a long time running.

And big shout out of thanks to Sonny Bono, for skiing into that tree. Otherwise, Disney's copyrights would be granted in perpetuity.

Is the DOJ approval any surprise here? Not to the rational mind. (Or even my irrational mind).

PS, that video is from 1950, 68 years ago, in the year "4 BCTV" (4 years before the advent of retail availability of color TV.).

Everyday America looks more and more like a small selection of mega-corporations that avoid monopolies by leaving one or two tiny competitors standing, all the while they play politicians to make sure than never changes. Well that or consorting with competitors, both seem extremely popular.

I used to remember a time when you could go to a candy store and buy quality products. Now there are three big companies who control the entire market and all of their products are full of enough preservatives to embalm a corpse. The only way to get anything good is to drive 70 miles to a hand made chocolatier.

With all their over-the-top characters, zany ideas, and their ability to tell old stories in new, fantastical ways, Fox News would actually work as a Diseasney property. Shame it won't be part of the deal.

I'm perpetually perplexed as to why on earth, a development such as this seems "new" to you.

No offense intended, but the basal plot of "Rollerball" (1975) was that giant corporations had pretty much taken over world government, and that, "Jonathan E" ("E" stood for "Energy corp.), had grown too popular with the people, so they tried to kill him in a final game of "Rollerball", the current most popular sport on the planet.

Then there was "Network" (1976) which won 4 Academy awards. It's plot was a newscaster went nuts, and became, "the mad prophet of the airways". Things were going along honky-dory, until Howard Beal, started his rantings to the people against a conglomerate forming mega-merger, which he felt would basically usher in the second coming of Satan. So, the network had him killed, on air.

Aldous Huxley predicted a technological toy infested dystopian playground, with class conscienceless banged into people's heads while sleeping.

And god knows, we all know how Orwell thought this would all play out.

If you never see another movie in your life, you really need to see "Network". Sack all this crap designed to divert your attention from what's really going on, sit down and confront some real, heavy duty, unforgettable, social commentary..

Robots turning into cars and trucks, there is such a place as "Asgard", and it's a whole planet, really?

Conquest is part of human nature. If someone can't accomplish that with standing arrnies, then corporate monopoly is the next best thing.

Look how far the Holy Roman Catholic has come. Rome itself was destroyed by the Huns in 476 AD, yet the church has continued its conquest based on winning the hearts and minds of the people. Although, The Mayans, the Aztecs, and the Incas, might argue with that assessment..

Deadpool will be PG-13?
Why would it? Disney has done R movies for a long time, they just go under a different company when doing those movies. Touchstone and Miramax, soon to be Fox. So no, don't expect anything to change. I don't expect anymore Deadpool movies, I think spin offs are coming which can still feature Deadpool.
Marvel and Xmen under one roof imo will be a good thing.
