Doom 4

what engine does doom 3 run on and what will #4 run on?

Doom 3 basically ran off it's own engine, the Doom 3 engine (id Tech 4 engine),
And as posted earlier Doom 4 is supposed to be coming along with the id Tech 5 engine.

I have seen rumors of it being multiplatform. What do you all know about this?

I think it'd be fabulous to see this on the PS3.

a multiplatform engine, that allowed crossplay

like PC users could join the same games as "controller users"

My PIII/600MHZ struggles to play Doom 3, i get 4-5fps lol. I am building a secondary computer soon just for the new games, so i should be able to play Doom 3 soon, and Doom 4 in the future.

Lol, sorry General. I haven't had to deal with that yet, and hope to god I never do.

PimpPanther, I somewhat agree with you. That is what they did with Shadowrun, I believe. It would be ok, but the downside is that the game couldn't be based around accuracy as much as just run and gun.

it would have to be DM and team DM mostly


team strategy based multiplayer would not likely be fun

I prefer having skill involved (games such as counter-strike) where headshots actually kill in one hit.

Plus, Being horror game you'd think that the multiplayer would be better as co-op....

yeah strategy team styled games are fun, but sometimes you want a run-n-gun game

Co-op would be awesome though

Yeah, but if I am gonna play a run and gun I want it to be more like the Gears of War, Resident Evil 4, etc. style game play. Maybe even some Devil May Cry 3rd person style gameplay.

So, it'd be nice if they incorporated the PC/360/PS3 co-op.

I think it'd be amazing if they added Wii to the list of consoles and somehow made it cross platform....

I think I am looking forward to RAGE more than Doom 4, RAGE will be the first implementation of ID Tech 5 yeah? then Doom 4 will use it aswell, then probably another quake using it too.

Oh and there is a prey sequal coming isn't there? Is that done by ID? anyone know if that is using Tech 5? the original used Tech 4.

I just hope that it's not a huge let down like Doom 3. The redundant gameplay really just killed what could've been a good game. The weapons sucked too, ID should have known that a crappy multi-player would've pissed us off, real hype killer if you know what I mean. The Source engine on the other hand is, in my honest opinion, the best engine ever. Super modable, frequently updated to make the already best graphics ever even better. Source just can't be beat.

I guess I'll go PWN some n00bs in CS:S in a minute. I need some practice for dust2 since I have a CAL match for it Monday.

Umm.. why would you hope it sucks?

Anyway, I agree to a point. The engine is getting to the point that it is over-run by *****s hacking it and cracking certain parts because of the accidental mistake that may have happened in the back of a Ford Edsel, the program Steam. If done right, and on purpose (j/k, of course) it could have been great. But they ruined it for anyone too poor to get DSL/Cable or is getting screwed by companies who offer that.

Well, I am probably wrong but I thought I read that Doom 4 would be the first.

I just sort or presumed RAGE would be first as it was announced first (with Tech 5) and we have seen more of it (havent seen anything from Doom 4 yet) but who knows. either could come out first using Tech 5.

Valve/Steam's next engine is rumored to be in progress and of amazing standards

Source 2 I haven't heard of (well I spose I have now ) could be nice. Is it actually a completely new engine or just a major update to it compared to the smallish updates done to it over time?

I'll bet its a complete revamp. I DON"T think that specific one was source 2, but a beta version (as stated on that page) of the standard engine update.

I think the next engine will be just like the current, like having a supermodel come up to you in the bar, you take her out for a drink, then find out she has had 3 kids, her career has failed, and she has STD's.

They really messed up with Steam, IMHO.
