DVD Burner has never worked

When I try to burn DVDs or CDs with my Iomega DVD/CD burner it tells me to insert a cd or dvd even though there is already one it be in it. I've tried the Microsoft troubleshooter. Several different software burning programs. Rolling back the drivers. Updating the drivers. I'm running on XP. Thanks in advance. Really need to get this running so I can burn my software and use it.

actually you can try upgrading the firmware. it works for my old laptop.

I actually think I got it working. OMG I've had this thing for years and this is the first it's worked. Thank you so much!
