Emachine black screen

so i have an older model emachine with windows xp. just recently i tried starting my computer up. well it goes to the emachine screen, then a boot up screen, then after that it goes black and does nothing. i have tried to boot into safe mode to restore windows but the computer doesn't even let me into safe mode. i'm hitting f8 at the emachine screen but it isn't working. any suggestions??

I'd say you need to reset the bios
