Error please insert blank disk when creating a cd

So I am running windows 7 with 2 different burners. One is an internal drive and one is an external drive. Both burners will create dvds just fine, but as soon as I try to create a cd using media player or any free cd creating software I get an message saying to insert a blank disk. I am at a complete loss here. I have tried updating drivers. I have restored windows to the oldest previous version that is available. I have also tried different types of disks with no success. I am about to go nuts here. I am doing everything I can not to reinstall windows as I have lost my disk. I know that there is a way to work around that but again it is not something I wish to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Try using a different blank cd, a different brand, even try a cdrw disc. Check & see if there is a firmware update for your optical drivers from the manufacturer's website, sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't.
