I am trying to figure out how IP addresses are assigned using IPv4 (IP addressing version 4), but can't seem to find a straight answer online. My question: is there a certain number that my IP address has to be? Is there any correlation between my IP address, subnet mask and default gateway? How is my IP address assigned or determined? The fundamentals in your article are sound - - but incomplete.

First the Fundamentals
Regardless of HOW the assignment is made {Static config, Address reservation, or Simple DHCP}, the IPv4 address *MUST* be in the range of the Gateway Address and the MASK. Without obeying this rule, you will get NO routing and all requests, including DNS, will fail.
Your Lan Assignment
Your router obeys the above and selects an address based upon YOUR ROUTER ADDRESS ( plus the mask). This is why most home users see an address like
  • 192.168.x.x
  • 176.16.x.x
  • 10.x.y.z
Your ISP public assignment
Your ISP has a wider choice of addresses due to the PUBLIC nature of the ISP and it's choice of a mask different than the 255.255.255.0 we normally see​
