Extreme infection

My mothers computer can no longer startup normally in windows xp. A blue error screen comes up, which i believe is a memory dump error/
Her computer has no current virus software installed, so i am having difficulties installing antivirus software in safemode.
Also i am having a real hard time doing a system restore...
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I am going to take a two prong approach here...
Maybe it is virus malware, or maybe it is hardware or driver issues...

For your BSOD, if you can get to safe mode and post a zip of 3 or 4 minidumps, that will help.
What are your system specs? (hardware, os, etc)
Is there a reason you are suspecting malware/viral infection vs hardware or driver faults?

Why exactly are you unable to install AV sofware in safe mode?
Can you get it to the desktop? What happens when you run it (and which package)?
Some malware will automatically block some known AV/Antispy/Antimalware installations, but there are workarounds.

What kind of problems are you having with system restore?
Have you been able to save any data files?


We (including new guys like me) are more than willing to help, but...
In order to help, the really knowledgeable folk who so generously donate their time here need a little more to go on.
