Facebook is tired of guessing about what we want to see in our news feed

Did your friend post something annoying on Facebook (again)? As of today you have more power at your fingertips to control which status updates, photos and links you see, or don’t see.

Facebook are updating the news feed preferences for iOS to give users even more personalization ability. The update will be available for Android and desktop over the coming weeks. Facebook conceded that while they try their best to improve and personalize the news feed, they can never know exactly what we want so they’re giving us more ways to control what we see.

What does this look like in action? Tap ‘More’ at the bottom right-hand side of the app, and then select ‘News Feed Preferences’ under Settings. From there you can select which friends and pages to see first, find new pages to connect to, and select which friends and pages to follow or unfollow.

This update, with the exception of selecting which people to see first and finding new pages to follow, basically makes it easier to do what we’ve been doing for a long time: unfollowing people whose updates we don’t like.

Selecting which friends and pages to see first isn’t a bad update. It’s reminiscent of having ‘Favorite’ friends, except instead of getting a notification each time a Favorite posts, the posts are just starred and at the top of your feed.

The interface is nice and easy to use. If you, like me, are a constant unfollower there is the helpful option to re-follow people (and it tells you how long ago you unfollowed each person.)

All in all, if you care enough to spend a few minutes tinkering with the new preferences, your Facebook feed may become a better place.

That is because everyone wants something different and can not be automatically guessed for them. It is the persons news feed and only the person will know what they want in it.

Stop guessing and give us the option to choose. make a list of categories available in a drop down list or something that we can pick from. news, sports, weather, whats hot in music or simply nothing etc. let us choose. create a facebook post and simply ask what categories we would want, narrow it down to about 10-20 to choose from as a start.
