Facebook says it will ban misleading coronavirus ads

In brief: After a series of polarizing decision regarding political ads, Facebook has decided to crack down on content that creates panic and hysteria around the coronavirus outbreak, as well as the wave of attempts to promote miraculous cures for the illness.

The coronavirus crisis is now serious enough - with a toll of 81,292 cases and 2,770 deaths as of writing - that tech giants are starting to carefully consider how they moderate related content posted on their social platforms.

According to a report from Business Insider, Facebook is crafting tighter rules for what content is acceptable on the platform when it comes to the illness in order to cut down on the rapidly increasing amount of misinformation posted online.

Specifically, the new ban targets any posts that "create a sense of urgency" around the acquisition of various products that promise to prevent or even cure the illness. This means that ads that create the impression that something is in limited supply or that it's guaranteed to be effective against the coronavirus are no longer allowed.

The policy extends to Instagram as well as services like Facebook Marketplace. Amazon similarly had to fight people who've been quick to capitalize on the demand for protective masks of all kinds by selling in small batches and gradually increasing their prices. The retail giant has warned that merchants who violate its pricing policies will be banned from the Amazon Marketplace.

The coronavirus outbreak has had a significant impact on the tech industry as a whole, with many companies choosing to skip major annual events as a way to lower the risk of spreading the illness. Facebook is among others like EA and Sony who recently decided not to be at GDC 2020, and Mobile World Congress 2020 has been canceled altogether.

Crazy ... I guess the politicians and media outlets are now riding us like cheap old donkeys to enable them to spread their lies, and people just promote them willingly ...

While I would love to blame politician's and media companies for this, why the hell are we not shutting this stuff down instead of spreading it? Because we (at least Facebook users ) are controllable monkeys, that's why.

I mean politicians and media companies always lie about everything (and plain biased aholes with an agenda, as your link indicated), but people will believe the BS and spread the manure, as long as the lie aligns with their emotional reaction.

Hate lefties? Than suddenly every lie on Facebook that seeks to broadly demonize anyone who might have any liberal values, is promoted and spread by those who's emotional reactions align. Hate righties? Same thing ... No one ever evaluates for logic or truth, but only their emotional reactions to things ... like a brainless zombie ...

I've made a pact to never vote for anyone or party that spends their campaign money on attack ads instead of fortifying their virtues.

To me it screams "I'm such a horrible 'X', that all I can do is make someone else look bad so I look better." ... I mean, just start throwing your feces on passersby - I'll feel the same way about you, either way.

As you can imagine, I don't do much voting ...

Look through the links below on the 'Wuhan Death Halo Virus' and choose your desired death rate. 1.3 to 3.3. That would be between 416,000 and 1,056,000 American deaths alone infecting only 1/10 of the population with the real transmission rate unknown as the new non-linked case in Solano County California (I personally believe it was baggage handler at Travis) shows.

I'm not sure what Zucker is doing suppressing 'panic and hysteria' since running away and hiding, at this point, seems the most logical step.

Apparently quoting the article isn't enough. The first sentence of the article states: "...After a series of polarizing decision regarding political ads, Facebook has decided to crack down on content that creates panic and hysteria around the coronavirus outbreak,..."

What you read on Facebook is being filtered, "...to crack down on content that creates panic and hysteria around the coronavirus outbread,..." The quotes are actual death counts from news sources around the world. If I chose one, like Breitbart or Fox, there would be crap about deliberate manipulation. The head of the US CDC, the Canadian, and the UK versions are telling you not to worry. Yet here are the facts.

The ostensible reason (read propagana reason) for filtering what you read is people selling snake oil because 'lets protect *****s' and we can keep the rest ignorant by default.

So there it is. You don't want to know, don't read. But don't say you weren't informed clearly.
