Firefox will not open

Just tried updating Java using Internet Explorer 7. Same problem as before. It suggests I look at the yellow bar below toolbar & allow active X - but I have not seen this during download attempt. I wonder if one of my other ( many ) antispyware or other blockers is active?
Curiously when I try http://java.com/download/help a very small Firefox window opens in top left of screen.

Here is a good guide to follow: for Internet Explorer

You may wish to Print this page

Inside Internet Explorer click on "Tools" on the toolbar
(Note: in IE7, you may need to press ALT on the keyboard to see the IE toolbar)

After clicking on "Tools" click on "Internet Options"

  • The first window you are presented with will be the "General" tab settings
  • Inside the "General" tab you can select "Delete..."
  • The next popup window will ask you what to delete.
  • You can select one button at a time, or "Delete all", answering Yes
Once this is completed (and it may take some time to do) Continue on:

Still in the General Tab
  • Click on "Settings" (next to Delete)
  • Change the "Disk space to use" to 65
  • Select OK
Now, go to the Security tab
  • Click on "Custom Level"
  • Click on "Reset"
  • Click on "OK"
Now go to the Privacy tab
  • What I do in here, is move the vertical slider slighty up or down
  • This allows "Default" to highlight
  • Click on "Default" (the slider will come back down)
  • Click on Apply
At last go to the Advanced tab
  • Click on "Restore advanced settings" (a bad way of saying default)
  • Also if you scroll down the list, you will find "Phishing Filter" (I usually disable this annoying popup)
  • Click on Apply
  • Click on OK
Restart Internet Explorer

Now, please try that page again

Changed the IE settings privacy etc as sugggested. In the Delete Browsing History should I have ticked the box "also delete files and settings stored by add-ons"?

Java download still fails. I note that Windows updates are also failing.

re updates:
i too had problems with updates for office but later there was another update for office and it installed.so perhaps could the update have been corrupt?

IE 7 removed & re-installed. Same error message when trying to download latest Java.
Somehow Firefox went to update, so now back with latest version which will not load.
Oh well, who needs a hobby when you have a PC?

Microsoft's Windows XP Home Repair Install step by step
http://www.windowsxphome.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdrepair/part3.htm

Remove your AntiVirus and personal Firewall first (plus any other real time protection)
On re booting I tried to launch IE by clicking on the desktop icon. Browser did not launch but a second IE icon appeared on desktop. A second attempt resulted in yet another copy of IE shortcut appearing.
As Internet explorer did not appear in Control Panel add\remove programs I tried deleting from c:\ program files . No success. Every time I deleted the .exe it re-appeared.
Now I can launch Mozilla Firefox version 2.0 but so far only limited success with IE I can get to msn.com but download of IE 7 starts but does not complete.

Internet explorer did not appear in Control Panel
You nearly got there.
It's in Add/Remove Programs, then Add/Remove Windows components (on LHS)

You can untick Internet Explorer, and then select Apply. Which will fully remove IE from your computer.
If you still have IE7 installed, you can also check Add/Remove Programs for a listing of Windows Internet Explorer 7 which you can try remove of as well.

Once Internet Explorer is fully removed, you can then try to re-install it (either IE7 or just ticking the Internet explorer entry in add/remove Windows Components.

That worked - up to a point. I uninstalled IE & was part sucessful in reinstaling. downloaded Windows IE7 but was prompted to re-start & then run windows up- date from "Tools" menu.
The page would not load.

Given problems with Mozilla Firefox - I am still only able to run version 2.0 - I am thinking of re-formating hard drive & loading Windows XP home. I just need to work out which files I need to backup to the external hard drive & how. I have Casper XP & Freecom backup came with the drive. The files I want to keep are Mozilla Thunderbird emails, Documents, and photographs & scans - I use HP Image zone to view these - and they are located in C:\Documents and Settings\Myname\My Documents\My Pictures\Picture Package.
Of course I am likely to find I have left out some vital data when I try to restore from backup.

Thanks for all the help & contributions.

I think Kimsland should be up-graded from "Guru" to "Guru the Untiring One Who Never Sleeps"

One Who Never Sleeps
how did you know? :)

Anyway, you could try sfc /scannow (from start-->run)
This will check all Windows files are intact, and have their correct versions.
Before running this, you should disconnect your network, and disable your firewall.
The command takes about an hour, and it may ask for your Windows CD

I powered down DSL router disabled personal firewall & set AVG virus scanner Resident Shield to inactive. Went to Start ===> run & keyed sfc. A command line window flashed open & shut.
I think my system must be Shurely Fairly Compromised
Have serious doubts about attempting to back up documents emails photos etc given that I have down graded self assessment from technically challenged to witless & possibly gormless.

Just in case, that was sfc<space><ForwardSlash>ScanNow (sfc /scannow)

But if you have tried that and nothing happened, and the Repair option (mentioned earlier) also did not help.

Then, I am thinking backup and re-install (clean) as well.

Quite right - I had missed out the space after sfc . Pleased to say I now have IE 7 with latest Java installed. The Windows Verification & Installer 3.1 would not upload when I went to tools, Internet options, update & was taken to www.update.microsoft.com so I may need to do a bit more. Now to see if I can get the latest Mozilla Firefox.

This calls for a celebration or possibly a snooze.:)
