Former student destroys $58,000 worth of computers at college using USB Killer device

Prison? Really? If these were critical systems to our infrastructure or lives were at risk I could understand that, but to school computers prison seems excessive. He certainly should have to pay for the damage and then some but I don't think clogging our prisons full of people who commit non-violent crimes is useful.

This guy should not be part of society. He's a worthless piece of ****. This is one type of crime where prison is definitely appropriate.

And you think he shouldn't because he only cost $58,000 to some school. That right there is mind boggling.

I'm trying to bring is all together, you're all trying to divide yourselves into pro prison anti prison camps. Stop that sht. Listen to Logic not emotions.
As I see it, he is a lost person in a lost world. Sometimes, the only way to help someone find themselves is to put them in a place where they have plenty of time to look within and find themselves.

I've been there.

@wiyosaya Well, you know what I swear by, and that is "nervous breakdowns build character", and gobs of it.

In any event, I think what most people missed about this, is the fact is that it was likely acted upon stemming from exactly the same set of social forces, frame of mind, and personality disorders, which often lead up to a school shooting.

He just didn't kill people, he killed computers. Which is why, (IMHO), why many didn't grasp the gravity of the act.

On a more personal note of frustration, sadness and disappointment, I have been unable to locate any Easter themed porn, where the girls were wearing white bunny ears. Perhaps it may anger me enough to kill my FIOS modem..., or not :rolleyes:l

Employee time investigating and replacing hardware cost $7,362? sounds a crime in itself
And yet isn't everybody always b!tching about how the minimum wage should be $15.00 dollars an hour?

And aren't prospective IT workers saddling themselves with massive student loans so they can make $30.00+ an hour at their first real job?

And aren't school computers usually pre-builts from an expensive American company such as Dell or Apple?

Don't schools usually have, at the very least, a teacher's union as wage bargaining representatives?

And wouldn't the destruction of the internal USB hubs require complete disassembly of all those towers, and replacement of all those motherboards? (That's assuming the CPUs (*) weren't casualties as well, along with any add-in cards). How
about the RAM modules?

Are you still confused about the costs?

(*) I will grant you that the processors may have been spared by the massive VRM. Although I honestly don't know if the VRM would have any effect on a massive overload of signal input voltage.

I'm not exactly sure how to interpret the intent of your post. But FWIW, I think felony grand larceny charges used to attach at around $500.00. I have to hazard a guess that vandalism / destruction of property would escalate to felony status at a similar dollar value. 5 to 10 years plus >up to< $250k in fines, is the usual bargaining start point in federal felonies.

That $250K fine always sounds ominous, but they're not allowed to fine your monies you can't possibly pay either.

I believe misdemeanor maximum sentence liability is no more than 2 years in most, if not all jurisdictions.

Feel free to fact check any of this post you feel might be necessary

I am right there with you on this. Who knows what weapon he might have chosen if the circumstances were different.

You and I both know that if he was having difficulties of any sort, it is his responsibility to find a way to resolve them in an acceptable fashion.

Sorry, I can't help you with that.

https://usbkill.com/ says:

The WiKi reads similarly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_Killer

[edit]
The USB Killer is shockingly simple in its operation. As soon as you plug it in, a DC-to-DC converter starts drawing power from the host system and storing electricity in its bank of capacitors (the square-shaped components). When the capacitors reach a potential of -220V, the device dumps all of that electricity into the USB data lines, most likely frying whatever is on the other end. If the host doesn't just roll over and die, the USB stick does the charge-discharge process again and again until it sizzles.

For someone to do this means they deserve to be punished.

I'd say some time in the booty house followed by a few public beatings will ensure he never thinks about doing anything even remotely like this again.

Very odd. Jussie Smollett fakes a hate and anti gay attack on himself, lied to Chicago police department, sent a letter through the mail with a white powered substance and gets a 10k fine and all 16 felony charges all drooped? He did all of this to try to make Empire pay him more because he thought that 600k a year wasn't enough money. Tell me where is the justice? Kid breaks PC because of what ever reason or someone trying to cause riots in the streets toward a demographic of people, particularity Tump supporters. Justice in the US is all sorts of messed up.

Just think what could have happened if this clown had gotten into a more prestigious school or worse yet, in the military as a command headquarters. No argument about the misdeeds of others going with little to no punishment but this kind of punishment should be enacted across the board, ESPECIALLY against the scammers, robo-callers, the whole nine yards. Our society depends upon computers so much that laws are now being enacted to make it mandatory to use them (try to fight "direct deposit" where you work) and it becomes punitive if you refuse. I think the only thing the court missed was to also impose restitution for the loss and deport him after he serves his sentence with full notification to his home government.

I would be so happy when robo-callers and scammers get the stick. I don't even know why I have a phone number at this point anymore.
Agreed!
