happy birthday linkedin social network

Business-minded social networking site LinkedIn turned 10 years old over the weekend. The company was founded in December 2002 by Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly, and Jean-Luc Vaillant but didn’t officially launch until May 5, 2003.

LinkedIn began like any other small startup just a few years after the dot-com bubble burst but ultimately ended up where perhaps millions wish they could be. The goal from the get-to was to create a social network for young business professionals – MySpace and Facebook already had the “fun” part of social networks covered. To say that they were successful in their endeavor would be a serious understatement.

The company currently employs more than 3,700 people across the globe with offices in Amsterdam, Chicago, Dubai, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Milan, Mumbai, Mountain View, New York, Paris, Singapore, Tokyo and Toronto, just to name a few.

The service is available in a number of different languages as well – 19, to be exact – including English, Dutch, French, Indonesian, Italian, Malay, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish, among others.

Even more important than the tremendous growth and success of LinkedIn, however, is the impact that it has had on the job market. Long gone are the days of applying for jobs in person and hoping for a call-back.  Today’s top companies want to see your online resume, check out your previous work experience and hear directly from others that you’ve done business with in the form of recommendations.
