Asus A8N32-SLI deluxe mobo.

The SATA on its own works fine & so is the PATA, both working on XPsp2 home.

But when installed together the PATA takes over & boots as master no matter what settings (link) I use, even when in the Bios it shows as secondary.

Any way of make the SATA boot & use the PATA for backing up things in.

thanx .......nick

Set the SATA controller to IDE in the bios. Then select any drive you want to be the boot drive in the bios boot first section... Simple

You need to learn how to go into the "BIOS" of the computer and set the boot order of the drives. Disconnect the second drive, reset the boot order, install the OS. Then after this is done, when you reconnect the second HDD, the computer should pick it up as a "volume" (storage drive).

This may be obvious but do you have the OS installed on both drives?

As Tmagic has pointed out the SATA drive must be running as IDE, since Win XP won't run a SATA drive as SATA, without separate drivers installed.

This would require a full reinstall of the OS anyway.

thanx all, you were right & I blind.

I managed to find the bios entry "hardisk", i CLICKD enter & there gave the choice of 1st & 2nd HD to boot.
