Help me to fix Error number: 0x80090008

When i want to use windows update from site.
I will get this error wheb i click on Express or Custom.

System info:
OS : Windows XP SP2 Version 2002
Anti-virus: Kaspersky 2009
Anti-spy: System Protector,Spybot search and destroy,A-squared free

Any instruction to fix this problem?

Its a long shot but please compare version of rsaenh.dll in c:\Windows\System32 & in c:\windows\ServicePackFiles.

Also, I need you to check your system's logs, by going to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer to whether there is something helpful to find clues about this issue.

Please clarify is the version of rsaenh.dll is same in both locations I asked you to compare?

Also, please let me know one more thing: that is, is System Restore is working as it should be on your system?

I Don't have c:\windows\ServicePackFiles.

But i found 2 rsaenh.dll in search

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\cf8ec753e88561d2ddb53e183dc05c3e : rsaenh.dll : 5.1.2600.5507

Answer to your second question: Yes it's on and working.

1. If you have Norton or Mcaffee running, either uninstall them or stop them.
2. If you are have Zone Alarm installed on this machine uninstall it or stop it.

Before proceeding to following steps, create a restore point, as a precaution/safety.

i. Click on Start, then Run and enter net stop cryptsvc
ii. Copy newer version of rsaenh.dll from C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\... to c:\Windows\System32
iii. Click on Start, then on Run, the type REGSVR32 rsaenh.dll and click ok.
iv. Reboot.

Mate need help again guess what happened!!!!

I create restore point and done net stop cryptsvc.

When i tried to copy the rsaen.dll i had an error "it might using by person or program". i tried to move with unlocker...unlocker request that i need to restart pc and did restart and when i try to find that file in search nothing coming up except in system32 folder.

Then i decided to do restore and i did then i search for that file and the rsaen.dll was in system32 only...not C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

Alright, we need to try another avenue. Do you have any log pointing to Event ID 16 in your system's logs?

You can check this by going to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, opening Event Viewer and checking out all the logs.

Also try to see what is being recorded in the Windowsupdate.log.

By default, the Windows Update client records all transaction information to the following log file:

Suggest you delete IE's Temporary Internet Files and flush all Cookies.

Do you have installed any security software (antivirus/security suite, popup and cookie blocker) and are any 3rd party toolbars installed (Google, etc) ?

If you have installed any 3rd party firewalls etc. disable/or uninstall it temporarily; then enable the native XP firewall, and rebuild the winsock stack.

Open a Command Prompt (by going to Start, Programs, Accessories, and Right Click on Command Prompt to open it with Administrative privileges) type in the following, and then press Enter after each command:

netsh winsock reset
exit

You will be prompted to reboot. Restart now with the native XP firewall enabled and see if the system can search for updates now.

Also, consider installing SP3 on your system.

Edit:
1. Check your Time Zone settings as well; just to ensure the correct info is being sent over to update server.
2. Check whether you have update kb976098 (Time zone Update) installed on your system.

Well i don't have any firewall software...just router firewall and Xp firewall enabled


Cleaned IE files and cookies and did winsock reset

Still no hope

Now i am trying to do your new tip

Well check it was correct and try to update the timezone but got a error "The Operation returned because the timeout period expired"

About kb976098 i just have security certificate file not exe.

You can verify that update is installed or not by going to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and check which windows updates are installed.

Also, just to check it, instead of connecting through the router; connect your DSL modem directly to your pc and see whether that works.

That time zone error occurs because probably NPT access on UDP port 123 has been blocked on your computer. Now, this can happen if you have used any third party firewall in the past. Anyway, for now, you can try to change the time syn server and see whether that fixes it.

Edit:
Lastly, I asked you to check your windowsupdate.log in C:\Windows; and if possible post its most recent about 50 entries here.

Get/Refresh Cookie failure error is probably causing this.
