Help with system 32

Hey guys,
This is my first post and I desperately need help in solving this problem. Everytime I start up my desktop I get a notice saying userinit.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate program.

I suspect it to be a virus however, I clean my computer regulary with a legit copy of norton.

Any ideas would help.

Cheers.

PS at one point it said C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
I have no idea what that means

Check the Shell value for Winlogon in your registry. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
should show:

Shell.....REG_SZ.....explorer.exe

Or download this tool: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_FixLogon.zip
This utility checks for the correct GINA value in the Registry and will allow you to restore it, if its incorrect.
