HP ENVY - black screen

I have an HP Envy core i7. Towards the end of April, my laptop stopped working. I attempted to turn it on and use it as normal and the screen remains "black." I'm not tech-savvy, but I'd rather attempt to seek advice before spending big bucks. Can someone please provide any assistance, if necessary?
