Ok guys,

so I have a old IBM laptop which is partitioned as follows, C,D,E,F. It is a 80GB ide.

I want it to work on a old dell laptop, how do I go about getting it to boot up and work in the dell?

I have already tried putting the ibm drive into the dell, slapping a xp cd in and doing a repair install but no joy. Wont even boot up.

Someone told me to try and do a boot sector repair....

Any suggestions that will work?

Of course there are problems - - you need the hardware drivers for the Dell.

get the make/model of the dell, go to there site, find support/drivers and download them to a CD or USB.

Hi,

where about do I put these drivers once downloaded?

Can I not just copy them somehow from the dell hdd to the ibm hdd ? then put the ibm hdd in the dell and away I go?

Maybe copy MBR?

It is my understanding that the sequence goes like this:

  1. download all to a CD and have that ready for a recovery
  2. boot the Dell into RECOVERY MODE
  3. tell it you have the drivers which will prompt for them
  4. insert cd from (1) and that will install them
AWAIT FURTHER FOLLOW-UP after performing (1). I'm rusty on this and some others will have more details - - -
