IBM will stop hiring for jobs that could be performed by an AI

A hot potato: It's a case of another day, another example of AI replacing human jobs. Rather than directly causing layoffs, tech giant IBM has confirmed it expects to pause and slow hiring for roles that it believes could be replaced with artificial intelligence at some point in the future.

Speaking to Bloomberg, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said that hiring in non-customer-facing roles, such as human resources, will be suspended or slowed as AI could automate many tasks performed by these hires.

Around 26,000 people within IBM currently fill the roles Krishna is referencing. He envisions about 30% being replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period. That equates to around 7,800 jobs.

IBM emphasized that no people currently working in these positions will be fired to make way for AI. However, it did say that any roles vacated by attrition won't be filled.

Now read: Could artificial intelligence be about to take over your job?

Like virtually all tech giants, IBM announced job cuts earlier this year in response to the economic downturn and post-pandemic-boom blues. It will be laying off around 5,000 workers in total.

An IBM spokesperson tried to put a positive spin on Krishna's comments, telling Insider that "There is no blanket hiring 'pause' in place. IBM is being deliberate and thoughtful in our hiring with a focus on revenue-generating roles, and we're being very selective when filling jobs that don't directly touch our clients or technology. We are actively hiring for thousands of positions right now."

Any company that publicly announces it is replacing humans with AI is going to find little goodwill from the public – a recent survey found that most people don't want a company AI to do the hiring, firing or promoting, and two-thirds of Americans would not even want to work for an employer that uses an AI recruiter.

The same report found that while most people believe AI will have a major impact on workers over the next two decades, just 28% think it will affect them personally. That may be wishful thinking; Bluefocus Intelligent Communications Group Co, one of China's largest media and public relations firms, said it was planning to replace its external copywriters and graphic designers with generative AI models. Closer to home, Dropbox recently admitted that the recent advancement of AI was mostly to blame for the company's decision to lay off around 500 people.

Permalink to story.

Human resources. You can't make this stuff up.

If all industries move in this way it will turn around and bite them. When so many human jobs are lost to AI and robotics there will be fewer people able to earn the money to buy the stuff the industries are selling. Follow that sequence to its logical conclusion.

This is where The Government should jump in and forbid the companies to substitute AI for Humans. We are the most important beings on this planet, so let´s make some noise about it.
You may not have noticed but our govt doesn't help us, if anything they'll wrap up a billion fancy words into a document that'll actually accelerate this bs.

why I'm trying to move into a job where I have to fix the machines, hope the rest of you are decent with a screwdriver too...

I bet in 2024 AI will be the winning factor in politics but not for the American people. The worst part is that anyone caught they will lay blame on AI. It's the best scapegoat. In no way am I a tin foil hat person and I regret laughing at them since doing the time and research most were actually right.

This really changes the game. Also anyone seeing odd about the lottery last 6-12 months? Sorry for this weird rant I will end it now.

We were always a leading country in thew most advanced tech. I dont think giving it up or severely restricting will do us good.
Beside, if AI can speed up medicine research, imagine how many dying people will be gifted life , or better yet full recovery.
No. The solution is that those who get very rich with this cant take their money away to some shady island in a shady bank. Those people above all live of the best civilization gives. They will want to keep using the gifts of civilization, so they have pay a fair tax.
I suppose, in a society where most people don't have jobs, it will be between 80-90% tax.

All that the state touches destroys. All is at gunpoint. Not good. Freedom is always better. The market will find its equilibrium.

Are we, though?
His attitude is typical in many humans. I am not surprised. IMO, all living beings are equally important.

100% tax = slavery

The other alternative is for the govt to heavily tax these corporations and use the tax money to pay workers that are left without jobs. Personally I don't like that senerio but based upon what these people paid for their education as well as lost benefits, etc. they deserve some kind of long term compensation.

Orwell knew this was coming. We are, at the very least, on the precipice of the beginning of the end of mankind.

Ha! HR people are the worst. Marketing lies to customers, but HR lies to employees.

Kind of poetic that the people that treat employees like an interchangeable "resource" are being replaced by the robots.

No need. People who like making money should be able to enjoy everything life gives. I only meant that they must not be able to get away without paying it and that their tax be must higher of a typical worker. If your company made 100 millions, you will have plenty left to have the most luxurious life after paying tax.
But in the world where many can no longer work and thus provide for themselves, rich people should not pay less than what I said, 80% least.
I am confident things like this will be normalized as soon as we 30% of working people unneeded.
But if we find a way to not go this road, it would be a good thing too.

The more that can be automated and perfected, the better off we'll all be -- in the long run.

Maybe AI should have to figure out the transition plan along with everything else it does.

I think universal basic income is a thing we will see in our life times, but not for another 20 or 30 years. AI will get so good that it can replace basically everything we can do. Frankly, I recently started an internet business with ChatGPT that would have taken at least 3 people to do just a year ago. It did market and product research for me, helped register the business, found stock photos for the website, helped create the website, wrote product discriptions for all the products and THEN helped me leverage social media to advertise for the products I'm selling. I, sitting in front of my computer, cut at least 150-200k worth of labor from the economy. Keep in mind, I'd give it horrible descriptions of what I wanted it and turn back amazing results

not trying to brag, it's just that we need to be realistic the powers of the new side automation.

Real question if one would take a course in ai currently what would be the best one? Most courses today are just certicates. If this is the future how do we stay relevant? We can complain about the inevitable or we can adapt and survive. Thoughts?

What you propose is unequal treatment in front of the law. Typical of socialism. All people must be treated equally. Typical of capitalism.

No sir. In brief, what I said is that in this new world someone earning millions will be paying nearly 80% tax, while someone making say 50k pretty much the same tax as now.
And it is not socialism. It is an emergency due to inability to provide enough jobs for most people who are willing and can work when AI does it all.
Rich people in many countries already pay much higher tax. I would not call it socialism. It seems like a fairly standard thing.
Rich and poor paying the same tax is not the opposite of socialism even. That is no more or less than unfair.

Don't forget that Government rely on private companies to do work for them, and with all things aside companies are not bound to the restrictions of the U.S. Constitution that prohibit the Government from doing.
