i was wondering about that .dll virus im not sure how it came up on my computer because its only been recently reformatted and i havnt downloaded any thing .

And i want to ask if any one knows what type of virus this is because every time i connect a usb ,phone etc this empty folder called phimnuglou or something like that gets created in any device i put into my computer

does anyone know what type of virus that is

thanks haidar

I use to get stuck into knowing all the latest Virus\Malwares out there
But then they multiplied to thousands of different ones, over the years

It's now best to scan with a Good Antivirus and Malware removal program (ie the guide again ;) ) and just remove anything found (whatever they are)

im sorry for questioning so much but what exactly is a malware and what does it do to my computer.

thanks

haidar

by the way i downloaded this of the internet do you guys think its good for malware

You asked if Malwarebytes is good for Malware removal
And now you're asking what Malware is

Well it's all those nasty things that you don't want on your computer (like Viruses too!)

Malware abbreviated from: "malicious and software"

thats why i asked you if its good for malware .

Im sorry i didnt mean exactly what malware is i only meant only what it does

thanks haidar

GREAT COMMENT and it highlightes the real issue of from whom the download is acquired!
P2P programs = Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.

Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of many malware infestations. see http://spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=26216

what exactly is a malware and what does it do to my computer.

Any software or program designed with the intent to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent.

As for what it will do to your computer, that depends on the code that the malware was written with. Some malware known as adware is designed to show you advertisements or popups to get you to click on the advertising. Some malware known as spyware is designed to spy on any variety of things from your browsing habits down to your bank account info. Then you have some rogue antivirus products, which are designed to tell you that you have infections that aren't really there, just to get you to purchase their product - which doesn't really remove infections. Within these categories you have keyloggers, worms, bots, rootkits.

Another example may be an infection that takes control of your email account and sends out spam from your address. There are also hijackers that can take control of your system and control where and what it connects to (bot nets), some of the better known hackers in the world have been known to flex their muscle with these type of infections controlling the victims computers to launch Denial of Service attacks - here is an interesting of one of the best known attacks using this approach ->

Read all 4 pages of this to gain an understanding of what could be done with malware -> http://www.securityfocus.com/news/11392

No doubt most of us have received some of this spam and obviously it is very profitable as this spammer was willing to pay $1million to launch these DDos attacks.

Limewire itself, is not a virus nor is any other P2P (Peer to Peer) program - provided it is used on a CLOSED network. However, As with most P2P software, it is used on the internet and on unsecured networks, and thus, becomes a conduit for viri. Moreover, P2P software is often used for illegal downloading of movies and games and other "warez" - often infested with viri from nefarious nodes on the network. The problem with P2P software is that if it is used on an open and unsecured network, the end client has no way of knowing whether the bit clients or nodes are clean, and thus it only takes 1 corrupt or infected computer (node) to infect the end recipient.

Most sysops will prohibit P2P software use on their networks for this very reason unless the network is closed and monitored. I hope this addresses most questions.
