ok, I understand this. but that leads me to a problem with supporting appr. 1400 laptops all over europa. I can't just go everywhere and de-solder the chips.

I recently installed Dell open manage client on one of my laptops (I did not install the server part yet). there are some dll files which are being used to edit, change, delete the passwords on the clients bios. I got to sneak into 2 dll files but well... same problem as usual... its chinese to me :)
any idea on this?

well yes I am taking care of appr 1400 dell laptops (d800,d600,d400,d610,d410,d820,d620,d420,d830,d630,d430,m60,m95 and a few other models) plus appr 1000 desktops all dell optiplex from 240 to 755. I am not alone doing this but its 99% in my repsonsibilty as well as the client config (os, software, networking and so on).
they are indeed not all locked but we have times of high fluctuation and we have alot of stupid users who can't remember their passwords after 4 weeks off. sad but true... for the newer models we were locking the bios config so that we can use a "standard" password. but thats appr. 300 laptops by now.

sorry, but its all about the stupidity of others I have to deal with, everyday :D

mscrx, so you can deal with dell directly, and explain the situation. i think, they'll understand you, and give you a instructions.

unfortunately not. first of all almost every country in europe has their own dell representatives (plus their own support).
We were able to agree some company specific configurations with dell and we could make a list of names with them who will be allowed to open a call for company laptops (because they are not bought all on the same persons name).
but thats it. every password costs $20 and every (excuse my french!) extra "fart" costs. 2400 computers might sound much but for dell we are a medium customer, so... no deal with them.

Name one case where Dell has been willing to do anything about it... even to the extent of board replacement. Dell has consistently refused to become involved, if the board or computer is out of warranty, or is not warranteed to the individual. The warranty does not transfer unless the original owner is known.
Dell will refer you to one of their authorized techs, but they are not trained to repair this issue.
If you know of any instance where Dell has become involved in a password case, please let us know.
