CES might be just around the corner, but some companies, such as Dell with its new XPS 13 laptop, prefer to unveil their products before proceedings begin. LG isn’t waiting, either; it’s just announced the company’s first 4K HDR projector: the HU80KA.

LG says that the problem with many other UHD projectors is that they’re “heavy, expensive, and difficult to install.” The HU80KA, which resembles a tall box with a carry handle, is around half the size of competitors' products. The unconventional design comes from LG’s “mirrorless I-shaped engine.” It can be hung on the wall or from the ceiling, or simply placed on the floor.

The HU80KA offers up an impressive 150-inch picture that can be projected onto any flat surface. It’s also LG’s brightest projector to date, able to reach 2500 lumens, while the 4K image is created using Expanded Pixel Resolution (XPR) technology.

The HDR video support comes in the form of the HDR10 format, allowing a wide range of deep colors. There’s also a pair of 7W speakers built into the projector, giving it a bit more portability.

As well as the usual optical output, HDMI, and Bluetooth (audio) connections, the HU80KA also features USB and Ethernet ports. You can even hook your keyboard and mouse up to it. Much like its Smart TV cousins, the projector runs webOS 3.5, which means it should come with the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime already installed.

LG will be showing off the HU80KA at CES. There’s still no word on price, but it could come in at around $2000 or less to compete against rivals such as Optoma’s 4K projector.

LG should just focus on a dedicated affordable home theater projector like Epson and SONY. The market does exist.

This just looks like a toy to show off to friends vs an everyday device. Who wants their projector in the middle of the floor or hanging from the ceiling like a lantern?

I want it. No need to mount on ceiling...what's wrong with that? To much nit picking

You can't think of anything but throwing a cord across the floor and stacking a pile of devices? Yeesh. You need to be a little more creative. :)

I install home theaters for a living. I have a lot of ideas when it comes to alternative solutions. But for them to advertise that the unit can sit in the middle of the room on the floor is dumb IMO

Most intriguing part of the device is the price that includes 4k and hdr, is it true 4k or faux k like JVC and Epson? The tech “XPR” doesnt sound the same as true 4k.

The pictures must be photoshoped ,as the unit appears to be on ,but I see no cords.,but ya can run them under the rug,or just do a proper install of a power receptacle in the right place.I can just imagine.

FRAUD. This is NOT 4K.

"Expanded Pixel Resolution (XPR) technology" is BS. Translation: The chip in this thing is only HD, and it's basically using interlacing to fake more resolution. There is never a UHD image projected at one time by this thing.

Techspot: Stop repeating lies in your headlines.

To be fair a lot of current popular mid level projectors do the same thing, epson and jvc come to mind. Sony makes a $5k true 4k (285ES) projector and while its resolution is glorious its contrast and features are limited. Its also about twice the price of the faux k epson ans jvc im referencing. You gotta spend big bucks to get into the ultra high end projector space. I hink Optoma also makes a new lazer 4k projector and I THINK its true 4k... but Im not sure about optomas quality vs the big names.

I for one, as an enthusiast but also realist and installer myself really like the sony 285 and would love to upgrade my ageless Panasonic if I had the spare change burning a hole in my pocket. 120” ps4 pro games would look stellar, obviously a high end gaming rig would do even more justice..

But to be honest, my panasonic still looks fantastic when running a true 1080p source such as bluray or “ps4 pro level” (usually 1440p sampled) game.

1080i OTA still nice to have 1080p on those BR helps but again we're in 1080i world. 4K, 8K, 16K or higher sounds nice but who has that sort of money to buy it and invest in it. Look how long it has taken us to get of of 480i, 720p.. OTA is still 1080i when the US got that I was excited to have all HDTV in the house now and all computer monitors are LED 1080i/p. I just can't get into 4K which has been replaced by 8K and then 16K out there or higher. When the cost drops down some more then just maybe I'll shell out the dough for these sets and when the OTA catches up if they ever do though. It's 2018 still it's 1080i.. LOL!

You are 100% correct. And Im pretty sure directv and comcast are only 720p native. Directv does have 3 4k channels but only one has 24/7 content..

Here you go.

I want to go round friends house who does not have a project. I take this portable projector.
I am going on a lengthy vacation, same as above. I take this portable projector.
I want to use the projector outside in the warm, dry summer. I take this portable projector.

Need I go on.
