In brief: Meta has designed and is building what it believes will be the fastest AI supercomputer in the world. The AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) is already among the fastest AI supercomputers running, and is expected to be unrivaled when it is fully completed in mid-2022.

As it sits today, the system is comprised of 760 Nvidia DGX A100 systems (6,080 GPUs) linked using Nvidia Quantum 1600 Gb/s InfiniBand two-level Clos fabric that has no oversubscription.

Furthermore, the system has “175 petabytes of Pure Storage FlashArray, 46 petabytes of cache storage in Penguin Computing Altus systems, and 10 petabytes of Pure Storage FlashBlade.” Early tests show the system is up to 20 times faster at computer vision workflows, nine times faster in the Nvidia Collective Communication Library (NCCL) and can train large-scale NLP models three times faster than Meta’s legacy production and research infrastructure.

That’s only the beginning. Once complete, Meta’s supercomputer will connect 16,000 GPUs. They’ve also designed a caching and storage system that can serve 16 TB/s of training data, with plans to scale it up to one exabyte.

Meta said the work done with RSC will help it build technologies for the next major computing platform, the metaverse. It is here that Meta believes AI-driven applications and products will become even more important.

Indeed, if Meta's vision of the metaverse plays out as the company hopes, it's no doubt going to require a colossal amount of processing power. A supercomputer of this scale could go a long way in bringing the concept to reality.

Knowing what you know about Facebook...

Knowing what you know about Zuckerberg...

Knowing what you know about technofascism and its effects on your country thus far...

Knowing what you know about your user data/privacy and hacks on them...

Do you really want to get into this?

Why? Business people love to spend money they don't even have yet just as a potential so is Facebook predicting they'll be able to convince the billions of active users they have to buy a VR headset and start using the "Metaverse"?

VR didn't catch up when others tried and it won't catch up now just because the Zuck is throwing mountains of pretend money to pretend they have that much interest: there's a ton of difference between just running a website and running game servers that half of the world population would like to access and use: Adoption rate is never going to reach even 1% of their current user base.

This is the part of the monorail scam where they start actually trying to build something that looks like it could turn into what they promised but mostly they just want to justify the money investments coming in and hope to attract more.

yep.

someone is going to do it anyway, facebook is probably one of the least evil choices.

other than just stopping all technical advances right here, if it was the govt building this someone would gripe.

amazon, gripe
microsoft, gripe
any other country, gripe

if facebook needs this much power to watch my quest while I play pistol whip then oh well.

I'm still not clear on what the metaverse is or what it offers me beyond the traditional internet services?

I'm going to assume it offers something to advertisers and that's why it's being built.

And we are talking about finite resources and sustainability, yet using more and more power for every single aspect of our lives. Throw in people that likes to live a virtual world to the mix, and thus, more power required.

It is terrible in every way but it's going to succeed, simply because we were always destined to go in this direction.

Think about how much money they will spend pushing this and how susceptible people are to marketing.

But can it run crysis...yuck that joke is no fun but I am not smart enough to think of a better one
