Microsoft Edge user numbers keep growing as Firefox falls

It is shame Firefox is fall. I use Waterfox now. I don't trusting Firefox as much as use to. They say they are privacy focus, while increase their own data collection. I want zero data collection and zero telemetry from browser. If Firefox continue believe those are necessary then I will using something else.
TBH, I don't trust any of them. I have all of them and spread my usage so they can't get a complete profile. Security through obscurity. Unless you're OCD, you can't stop all data collection.

Chrome is a memory and data hog. When I only had 4 Gb of memory, I could barely even use it. 8 Gb improved it somewhat as well as other browsers. I still don't use it much except for Google News and Google products. I haven't opened up Edge much except for Microsoft products which they already have information on. I've used FF mostly, but I have been put out with them lately and have been using Brave. Brave aren't innocent either with their crypto credits. Brave haven't been honoring promised payments to creators. On a desktop, there's Dissent, courtesy of Gab founders. Really though, I don't recommend using any one browser for everything, ever. Because you know? Diversity. Right?

Firefox is a great browser. Chrome, on top of being malware, doesn't work well with bookmarks (same as Edge) and eats resources like I bought my computer just for surfing. I used to complain about some things in Firefox, until I started using Chrome. After which I immediately went back to Firefox.

And regarding Edge, it's much better than IE, but it's still crap. Of course, Google wants people to use either Chrome or Edge because........ yes, the new Edge is based on Chromium. So basically, all the **** thrown at Firefox is because Google wants total control over surfing, searching, and your computer.

I suspect in the near future when you type "install firefox" in Google Search, it will throw you to "download chrome" web page.

I've used Firefox for over 20 years and Mozilla has never done me wrong. I can't say the same for Microsoft or Google.

I also like the fact that Mozilla is non-profit. You know, no greedy corporate overlords. It's the same reason I'm with a credit union instead of a bank.

Funny how you can't even imagine someone switching willingly, like me. Sorry to burst your bubble.

It's an excellent browser, and I don't understand this gag reflex whenever Microsoft's name comes up. The 2000s want their memes back.
I've been using Edge since it first came out. Once it stopped being a RAM hog it became a decent browser. I know there has to be a lot of Chrome users aghast that anybody would stand behind it. Y'all need to try it before bashing it.

Perhaps Firefox shouldn't have prioritized activism over software engineering

Activism?? Like what??

Let me guess: FireFox was invented by the "Deep State" and is using "secret messages" to influence a certain agenda to control the world through cannibalism and human trafficking??

Wow, you catch on quick..! (Jus' kiddin').

This article highlights one of the things that is wrong with users. They are willing to trust the wrong people. Edge is the very first thing removed from any install of Windows I do. Have no room on my PC for Microsoft's crap version of Chrome..

look up BAIL-IN vs BAIL-OUT; it's shocking
Ah yes. It's got my least favourite capitalistic buzz-term:

“too-big-to-fail” - A capitalistic buzz-term that shouldn't exist because it's only used to sway the opinions of the uninformed masses against their best interests. Any corporation that is badly managed deserves to fail (Everything on Wall Street, Wells-Fargo, Chase, etc.). This also applies to any military project that is hopelessly plagued with issues, will be too expensive to properly implement, or both (Zumwalt-class, F-22 Raptor, F-35 Lightning II). Sometimes, you just have to cut your losses and start over from scratch.

(satire) NO -- we need more Gov contracts to keep the mindless employed (/satire)
The over run on the Lightning II is flat shameful. Kelly Johnson would have fired the project manager long ago!!

Well, I use Firefox and Opera, which is another Chrome based browser.

Thus, I don't need Chrome or Edge. Since as they say, "you turn them upside down, they all look alike".

Google is too big to trust, like Microsoft was in the 1990's.

Have you been a long-time Opera user? I stopped using it shortly after they ported it over to Chromium and got bought out by the Chinese. I'm on Vivaldi now - it's a new project started by Jon von Tetzchner, Opera's original founder. It's also based on Chromium but they are very user-focused, allowing for a lot of Opera-style customization and user privacy. Been using it since alpha and love it.

It's hard to do when the military's commanders have revolving doors at companies like Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, Northrop-Grumman, General Dynamics, Electric Boat and Raytheon.

Ah yes, Kelly Johnson, now there'a an individual who truly would have been worth cloning...several times, in fact!

Unlike you who are reading here, most casual Internet users just don't care. Whatever works, with the least geekwork required, rules. That usually means, "default settings."

Those who didn't hear about Firefox going woke on its erstwhile faithful users, https://duckduckgo.com "SJW Firefox" .

For those who always were faithful to traditional, Christian, or Catholic marriage of one man and one woman, joined monogamously "until death does you part," you may prefer https://Brave.com to Firefox, or https://www.PaleMoon.org, which started as a Firefox fork, and which has add-ons or extensions for most Firefox functions and more.

Really interesting to read all of this anger at Microsoft updates. I use Edge on my personal computer and I use Chrome at work. Not once has Windows tried to force Edge on my work computer. Am I just getting lucky, missing these forced changes? I don't understand.

When I built my new desktop back in December I decided to give Edge a try, and I've even left Bing as my search engine. FWIW, I still switch over to Google maps.
Windows might not force Edge but it WILL absolutely hijack file associations. If you google "edge opening pdf instead of acrobat" you'll see it's a common problem. At work, I've had to reset my association to Acrobat for PDF files almost weekly. It's even happened right in front of my eyes as I was opening and reviewing PDF files, the first few opened in Acrobat then suddenly Windows started opening them in Edge! BS

I don't get the hate for Windows 10. I've been a Windows user since version 3.1 and at this point 10 is easily the best Windows version. Edge is snappy and clean.

This is not fanboyism, I regularly use Chrome/Firefox in Windows/Linux/Chrome OS.
Now that Edge has Sync on Linux, I switched all my devices from Chromium to Linux. Also, the convenience of having a real installer for windows while Chromium does not.

But to be honest, the final nail in the coffin was Edge being capable of streaming Netflix at 1080p while Chrome and FF do not.

I think as of now, Edge is the better browser overall.
Netflix and EDge- two exploiters.

In April 2020 Mitchell Baker was named CEO of Mozilla Corporation - again. In 2018 she received a total of $2,458,350 in compensation from Mozilla, which represents a 400% increase since 2008.

For the same period Firefox marketshare was down 85%. When asked about her salary she stated "I learned that my pay was about an 80% discount to market. Meaning that competitive roles elsewhere were paying about 5 times as much."

"That's too big a discount to ask people and their families to commit to."

By 2020 her salary had risen to over $3 million, while in the same year the Mozilla Corporation had to lay off approximately 250 employees due to shrinking revenues.

Baker blamed this on Coronavirus.

Know your benefactor. Microsoft Edge is preinstalled and free, this is the exact same deal they pulled with Internet Explorer. They killed Netscape with it then and they'll do it again.
