Microsoft says it's time to kill off the password

? I'm out of my pay grade here, so I'll shut up and be good!;) I'm going back to posting things I hopefully know a little some thing about. Hopefully that's W10 free upgrade. I however have a lot to learn about that also.:p This is a great forum. I'm learning a lot here. Thanks TS. W10 isn't perfect, but IMHO, it's getting better. Sooner or later you're going to have to think about up dating to W10 if you want to be safe on the internet. These are are my thoughts tonight!

Hi I'm just a old country boy that just fell off a turnip wagon. I listen and I learn, and hopefully I can pass forward what I learn and still remember. I only use passwords where they are required. I use the same password on every thing. That maybe stupid, but that's just me. IMHO the internet is a cesspool and will only get worse. Guess what my password is! Wrong!! ROFL
This is a great help forum. Thanks TS owners and staff. You are appreciated by this old man.

Typing the password is still faster Windows Hello especially if you didn't invest thousends in a laptop or computer for such whistler.
But I understand M$ because they have unlimited resources to have fun everyday.

Ughhh, the IR camera on my Surface Pro 4 logs me in instantly.

Actually - financially speaking, MS is doing very well. Almost all manufacturing/Engineering companies are still using Windows software and many are using both Win 10 and Office 365, as well as cloud services by MS. In January of 2017, MS shares were at $62. They are now at $85. According to the Motley Fool. "Microsoft once looked like a dinosaur doomed to a slow decline as companies like Apple usurped it. That's no longer the case, and investors who buy shares won't be getting a relic of computing past, they'll buying into a company that has transformed into one of the brands that will power the future"

OK, and the Dow Jones is now in excess of 24,000, since Trump took office. Do you think that could have M$ coat tailing those industrial gains. Or do you think they did it all on their lonesome?,

The guy is copying Apple's business model, and he's a duplicitous. $%^&*(@. What part of Apple is still succeeding beyond M$' wildest stolen dreams, is unclear?

In case you missed it Steve Baumer was Bill Gates childhood friend or longtime business partner, along with being an imbecile, magna cum laude. Without Bill Gates around to think for him, he was pretty much lost. He's the one who ran M$ into the ground with that Windows 8 all touch sh!t. They pretty much had nowhere to go but up after that fiasco.

MSFT stock has been booming for nearly 4 years, not just this year. And Windows is a small fraction of what make Microsoft these days. Windows 10 has ZERO to do with the stock surge of MSFT.

lol - At first glance I read Trump Wagon. :p
Laughing my XXX off. You are appreciated my new friend. I'm not sure which wagon Trump fell off of, but he's scaring the XXXX out of me. That's a new and different topic my friend. I'm thinking we should all be concerned and a little bit worried (y)

Thanks! TS Forum staff for allowing me to be my self hereon TS forum.! I'm hoping I can be a asset here on TS forum..I'm sure you will let me know when I need to leave the forum.

Their stock is doing good because ***** Balmer is gone.

Why, I myself briefly touched on this, back at post #23:

The flaw you speak of was resolved before the article ever came out.
That may be so, but they put it out with that flaw... What else lurks? My point is, before you kill the password, make sure the replacement is "hardened" and don't do an Apple and force your choice on me until it is proven to be at least as reliable as a random 16 or 20 or more digit password.

Face unlock was terrible when Android released over half a decade ago, it was terrible when Apple recently copied it and passed it off as their own (as they love to do), and I'm sure it's still terrible with Windows.

If what you're protecting is important to you, create a long and secure password, and enable a 2 factor authenticator. I suggest something like andOTP, it works anywhere you can use Google Authenticator, but it's Open Source.

An easy to remember and very secure password would be to simply write a sentence and tack on some extra numbers and symbols. Example password: I love playing football!@09

Love Microsoft, but they should kill off buggy Windows Updates first, then worry about killing off passwords later (case in point, KB4054517). LOL.

How about letting us decide Microsoft? Not really interested when you launch a system that can be fooled by a photo.

I'm fairly certain that MS will allow you to choose which form of ID input unlocks the software. I can use either a password or facial recognition when using my Lumia 950 phone.

Well let's talk about how Apple has been copying much more than MS has. Here's a partial list:
Larger sized phones: If it was up to Steve Jobs, the iphone would still be 4", max.
Wireless charging: The iPhone 8 only now has this feature but Samsung and MS/HTC/Nokia, among others have had it for years.
OK, now you've ventured off the beaten path to the land of imaginary friends and unicorns. What in god's name, does Apple building bigger phones have to do with M$ copying their closed system business model. You know, with the Windows Store, and Cloud M$ is herding its OS users to the products they can get a bigger cut from, and freeze out individual developers, the same way Apple does.

Facial recognition: My Lumia 950 has had it for 2 years now. Apple is finally going that way.
Decent camera with low-light abilities: Nokia's cameras were light years better than Apple's for many years.
Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint) What does Apple have? - nothing as polished as the aforementioned programs.
As far as any of this nonsense goes, again, what in God's name does M$ have to do with Android phones or hardware?

Apple and M$ have far different product lines, it's the methodology behind their marketing strategy they're copying from Apple.

Besides, when was the last time M$ ever had a smart phone that you could get out of a warehouse, without calling in a bomb scare? I'll field that question for you. Answer, never!

That's a bizarre question if I ever saw one. I'm not sure what you are talking about but here are some features my phone has that Apple never had or is just now introducing:
1. Replaceable battery: I travel every so often and this feature really comes in handy. It takes me 5 seconds to pop in a fresh battery.
2. Dual SIM cards: Handy for separating work from personal calls and email/text.
3. Metro tiles that convey information without having to click on them. Apple and Android have many dumb icons, IMO.
No, my phone is not waterproof. Like carrying a baby, I tend to remember to keep it protected from heavy rain, lakes, and the ocean.

I'm expanding your argument to include technology-copying by Apple. In fact, they still don't have touch screen capability with their Macbooks. And Ipads are not nearly powerful enough to replace full-blown laptops. Apple's dual camera has been done by Huawei for a while now.

My Windows Lumia 950 phone recognizes me with and without either of my two pairs of glasses. The algorithm appears to be quite sophisticated.

I should enable this on my Lumia 950. Have been to lazy to do so.

Some people think I have a $1000 iPhone when I use this. I tell them MS has had this feature long before Apple tried to convince its fans of how great it is. Then I pop out my battery in 5 seconds.......

MSFT stock has been booming for nearly 4 years, not just this year. And Windows is a small fraction of what make Microsoft these days. Windows 10 has ZERO to do with the stock surge of MSFT.
No, Windows is what makes M$, M$, period.

While Windows itself may not be the highest dollar segment of their business, Windows is, (if you'll pardon the upcoming pun), the "window", to the rest of their business.

Windows leads you to the M$ store.

M$ sells "Surface Tablets", because they have Windows installed.

Windows leads you to the M$' cloud services.

Since you already have Windows running on your machines, it's only natural to install M$ "Office 365", and now M$ has you locked into a subscription model.

And the chunk of your paycheck going to M$, just keeps getting bigger, all because of Windows.

OK, if the general stock boom. as you're claiming, has nothing with the stock market boom in general. Then count backwards to when they got rid of Steve Baumer, and Windows 8, and count from there.

Since you absolutely need an operating system to tie all the rest of M$' offerings together, hey, why not use Windows.

Hell, Apple had some trouble getting their damned laptops out the door, before they started offering the dual boot software for Windows. It's called "Boot Camp". Maybe you've heard of it?

MSFT stock has been booming for nearly 4 years, not just this year. And Windows is a small fraction of what make Microsoft these days. Windows 10 has ZERO to do with the stock surge of MSFT.
As I explained above, you should probably think before you start posting nonsense.

ROFL I love this thread. I'm learning a lot. So many different opinions. I guess that's what makes this old world go around. We will probably never agree on any thing, and IMHO that's probably a very good thing :D IDK?

As I explained above, you should probably think before you start posting nonsense.
Hey @captaincranky Nonsense can be a good thing. You don't have all the answers my friend, and neither do I. When you listen, you will learn and that's a good thing. I wish I were always right about these things, but I have learned that there is always another side to every story. This is a great forum and these discussions are allowed. That's not happening on a lot of help forums so be glad TS allows these discussions. Thanks TS!

Well Mr. Holdum, it would seem the honeymoon is over, so to speak, since we're about to have our first argument.
Hey @captaincranky Nonsense can be a good thing. You don't have all the answers my friend, and neither do I.
First off, allow me to point out that it would appear, you don't have any of the answers to which you're referring. All you've really done is lavish praise upon Techspot, and say what a wonderful and spirited topic this has developed into. There has been no input from you on the actual article.

IMO, your praise, platitudes, and now caveats, haven't done anything in furtherance of that actual topic. It's just filler material, which has the unfortunate effect of separating reply and rebuttal, into a disjointed diatribe.

To suggest that the Windows OS isn't still at the core of M$' as a corporate entity, and isn't directly related to rises and falls in M$' public acceptance of their other products, goes beyond "nonsense", to utter absurdity..

The concrete proof of that, is the fact that after Steve Ballmer put his full support behind Windows 8, which caused a huge loss of revenue, and destroyed public confidence in the OS, particularly in the commercial sector, he conveniently chose to "retire".

When you listen, you will learn and that's a good thing. I wish I were always right about these things, but I have learned that there is always another side to every story.
Perhaps so, but you seem mentally incapable of choosing one side or another, or offer anything of substance to support either side.

This is a great forum and these discussions are allowed.
First of all, this is a sub forum, not the forum in its entirety. Second, that's the whole purpose of this particular sub forum, which is to allow opinion and editorial content from its members on current.technical events.

The "help" amounts to therapy for said members, being able to get their thoughts on said technical events and topics they find interesting or disagree with, off their chests.

This particular sub forum's benefit for Techspot itself, is the voice it gives the membership's concerns, without Techspot itself posting anything contrary to its advertisers wishes and interests.
That's not happening on a lot of help forums so be glad TS allows these discussions.
And again, as I explained in some detail above, this the an "Op-Ed" sub forum. So not only is it permitted, but welcomed
Thanks TS!
And of course, what else could I have expected from you, but another soft breeze, directed at the rear of staff''s sails, so to speak.

While 10 years tenure here certainly doesn't automatically confer correctness to my contributions, it has allowed me the dignity and status to contribute, in lieu of simply indulging myself in rampant brown nosing of the site's operators.
