Misbehaving Microphone

Hi everybody, I am having a peculiar microphone problem.
I have simple earbud-like headphone/mic device that I use often with my phone and laptop. Here is my issue: I have a new desktop that I recently just built. It has a mic jack and a headphone jack. I understand to get my headset to fully work, I'll need to get myself an audio adapter.
Right now, when I plug the headset into the microphone jack (on the front panel), the computer recognizes the device as input and a microphone. But no matter what I do, it won't recognize any sound coming in. The only time I get sound coming in is when I plug it in, and it crackles. The crackling registers as sound, and a friend on discord can even hear it. Any ideas? I have been googling this issue, but have had no luck so far finding this particular issue.

Useful facts:

Mic is seen/recognized by computer when plugged in.

Mic works on other devices.

Drivers are up to date. Its a new build.

Sound does come thru the headset when it is plugged into the headphone jack.

Mic is not muted (to the best that I can tell).

Sound comes in only when plugging it in or unplugging it. Sound is a cracking sound.
