Editor's take: Mortal Kombat fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the franchise’s next feature film. The New Line Cinema flick was originally expected to premiere on January 15 but was recently bumped to April 16, 2021. Even at this late stage, we still don’t have a solid idea of what sort of storyline to expect. The MK short film from 2010 had a ton of potential but with a different team now leading the project, it’s anyone’s guess as to what they came up with.

The movie dates back to 2010 when director Kevin Tancharoen put out an eight-minute short film based on the popular fighting game series called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. A year later, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced that Tancharoen had been chosen to direct a feature-length film based on the short. Unfortunately, it never came to fruition and Tancharoen parted ways with the project in late 2013.

In August 2015, James Wan signed on to produce the film and was joined by Simon McQuoid as director in November 2016.

Screenwriter Greg Russo previously confirmed that Mortal Kombat will be rated R meaning that for the first time ever, fatalities will be shown in a MK movie.

The new movie will arrive in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day, April 16, as part of Warner Bros. controversial new dual release program.

In how many brutal ang gory ways one has to kill a wrestling opponent, before it becomes absurd?

Mortal Kombat: YES!

Scorpion: Get over here!

Mortal Kombat was a perfect film for the 90's.

I saw it in theaters and the parts that stood out where when the entire audience was in awe of the special effects for Sub Zero, when everyone rolled their eyes when Johnny kicked Goro and he spun flipped...and everyone was like "ooooh sh*t" when Reptile morphed into a Ninja.

But nowadays, I think the concept is ridiculous and the story tremendously convoluted.

Well I just hope they break the tradition of the 2nd, 3rd, etc movies not being able to live up to the hype and usually being a tremendous disappointment as compared to the first ....

If that Scorpion is from the movie, then I am as worried as he is! :)

Are people really paying $15/Month for a subscription service in 2020 without 4k and Roku compatibility?

What I always found ironic is that Mortal Kombat was the first fighting game to have blood and death in it. That was its identity, what set it apart from Street Fighter and made it more popular than Street Fighter.

Then the Mortal Kombat movie comes out and there is literally no gore in it. Despite this, the original Mortal Kombat movie is one of the greatest martial arts movies that I'd ever seen with (shockingly) fantastic performances from the entire cast. The fact that the Street Fighter movie was so exquisitely bad only made Mortal Kombat look like a masterpiece in comparison.

Then the sequel came out which was 100% bovine excrement.

Such good timing, the guys at Carpool Critics just did an episode on the 90s classic. Worth a listen for some good ol' nostalgia!
