Mother says her 14-year-old boy is a scapegoat after Epic sues him for cheating

So what happened? Did Epic just ban lot of cheater accounts and the players lost access or are they sueing the cheaters?

If she is trying to sue because her child can't play the game due to a ban, get over your self. If she is trying to sue because they are taking legal action or sueing the child (obviously can't be that) then she should win. Simple.

Sounds to me like she did more to damage her son's defense than to help with a letter that was not very well thought out. She'd have been better off getting a lawyer. She basically admitted that her son did what he was accused of doing and went on a senseless tirade accusing the accuser. That's a tactic that rarely works in a court of law.

The kid may have been a bit naughty, but she is absolutely right and she makes some fair points - it is absolutely not ok for a corporation to sue a minor for cheating at a game. The whole notion is absurd.

So the kid is indeed getting sued. Yeah this case is absurd and I hope EPIC loose the case.

Infact the corporation should be sued by players for not being able to implement better anti-cheat. They're paying for a product which is not delivering.

Full story in a nutshell (some parts TS missed that are important):

1: Kid cheats
2: Kid gets banned
3: Kid makes new account
4: Kid gets banned
5: Kid makes new account; posts youtube video explaining how he did it AND ASKS FOR DONATIONS
6: Epic issues DMCA takedown against Kids Youtube channel
7: Kid defeats DMCA takedown request; makes videos ASKING FOR MORE DONATIONS
8: Epic sues Kid

No sympathy for the kid here. He's ignored every action by Epic thus far, and his mother is his biggest enabler.

There is cheating, and then there is cheating. When it is so colossally epic as in this case, the kid obviously needs some sort of attitude readjustment, it is just unfortunate that it is Epic that needs to do it. Left alone what kind of adult is this kid going to be?

**8. Epic sues person behind account, who happens to be a kid.

Pardon..? Fortnite is a paid game, but the battle royale is a f2p portion they released. So whoever is paying specifically, is likely a Fortnite player and not just a Battle Royale player. I hope people actually read the suit, instead of simply jumping to the defense of one side or another.

Many of us probably did worse when kids than cheating at a game and probably just sent to bed with no meal as punishments. Why people demonize this kid? Lawsuits is scary thing and mother need to protect her kid. Lawsuits can ruin lives. Cheating not ok. Hope they can make a deal to stop this cheating and lawsuits.

Sorry lady, but your son isn't a "child" anymore. According to English dictionaries, he is now an "adolescent" and is likely more intelligent than you considering all of your silly mistakes in your letter that's going to damage your child's defense more than help him.

He isn't exempt from being taught a lesson just because you want to be soft as **** in raising your children. There's rules to follow and consequences if broken.

Epic is sueing to stop the perpetuation of cheating. Doesn't really matter if the kid was playing the game or not. Releasing his name was probably (even if he wasn't 14) unwise, but it shouldn't be related to the initial lawsuit. 2 wrongs don't cancel each other out.

The part that TS didn't report on is the most important part: The Kid has a Youtube channel where he showed how to cheat, and more importantly ASKED FOR DONATIONS. Epic issued a DMCA takedown request on the channel, which the Kid somehow defeated (still trying to figure that one out...)

In any case, the problem isn't the fact the Kid cheated, it's the fact he publicly solicited for donations over it. Or in legal terms: He modified copyright protected content then tried to make money off it. That's a no-no.

You know if epic games would use an ip ban or mac address ban they could solve these issues.
Well, there are a couple of problems with banning cheaters on a free to play game. You have account ban, which is useless on a free to play game since another account can be made for free. IP bans are not a good idea since residential users wont have a static IP, so their IP can be changed with any reboot of their router. MAC addresses are depressingly easy to spoof, so that is not a good type of ban either..

I hate cheaters more than anything really. I put them in the same category as child molesters and murderers. A bit extreme I know. But...did I say I hate cheaters?

Just make what ever cheats the kid was using ,a part of the game ,for everyone ,not a cheat ,or advantage anymore,,but in the courtroom ,the Epic lawyers will eat the kids and moms lunch.
I hate cheaters ,
thanks though, you cheaters are helping me save a bunch on hardware upgrades and fees.new games ,etc.

You don't know that she didn't do exactly that as well as write the letter.
Let's stop being judgemental and let her parent her kid, you go parent yours.

Does that letter she wrote sound like or infer she took any sort of action towards disciplining the boy? If she was parenting him right in that specific situation we wouldn't be discussing it in an article comment section. I can only go by what was written to make my opinion.

"Let's stop being judgemental and let her parent her kid, you go parent yours."

I wonder how many children have suffered or turned bad because someone with common sense didn't intervene on behalf of a child due to out right crappy parenting?

I presume, and hope, that now that the woman has become aware of her son's misconduct, she has indeed disciplined her child, and is preventing him from further misconduct. That she didn't mention this, as it wasn't directly relevant, in her short statement of her objections to the lawsuit shouldn't be taken to imply that this didn't happen.

Her kid is playing some video game. Why would she know that he was using cheats?

There is a fine line between crappy parenting and being charged for child abuse. If you want to lay blame on parents, you must first lay blame on law enforcement for getting in the way. Many parents are accused of child abuse when what they did was not child abuse. But yet when the kid grows up and is punished by law the penalties are much worse than what the parent did. I don't blame the parents. I blame the system for tying parent's hands behind their back. Kids truly have nothing to fear, which is why they are uncontrollable.
