MSI readies liquid-cooled GTX 480 HydroGen, more

MSI is supposedly preparing to unleash three new Nvidia graphics cards designed for performance junkies. Word of the GTX 460 Hawk first surfaced a couple weeks ago and the custom board is expected to ship with the Twin Frozr II cooler, making it a breeze to overclock. Early reports say it will ship this month with 1GB of VRAM and a standard 675MHz clock speed, but that can easily be pushed to 800MHz and even up to 1GHz with some voltage tweaks.

The other two products are both variations of the GTX 480. One is being called Lightning but few details are available about it except that it will also be an exceptional overclocker. The second should arrive as the GTX 480 HydroGen and it'll carry an 830g copper water block, primed to shatter benchmarks and power supplies. You'd expect the HydroGen to come overclocked, but it seems to use the reference specs. It's rumored to be around $695.

One important point anyway: if you want even more power than a GTX 460 SLI set up can offer, been able to pair a GTX 480 SLI set up would be wonderful, specially if we could get rid of the high temperatures and awful noise from a standard GTX 480...

better off just buying any ole card you want and add your own water cooling. kids these days, too lazy to even install their own waterblocks.....

A waterblock for a 480 cost around 140 us dollars right now. I'm not saying you're not right. It appeals to a small market.

Sorry buddy but its already been said that there will be no shrink in architecture for the 6000 series, ati is about to pull an nvidia 2008 style

Word has it that the HD6770 will be the first cab off the rank in an effort to be both a "proof of concept" card, and to attempt to curtail the GTX 460's popularity/sales.
My understanding is that the HD 6870/6850 won't hard launch (as opposed to a paper launch) until the new year. Supposedly the HD 6870 is at GTX 480 performance, and possibly 5-10% more, but due to increased shader count could end up having both a reasonably larger die area and power draw (~ 210+ watts) than the HD 5870/5850. It is also rumoured to retail $US50 higher than the GTX 480 ( performance/price ratio linked to the GTX 480).

Anyone expecting a free performance gain (either through price or power consumption) with the new series is likely to be disappointed.

BTW: That's what any full cover waterblock looks like. So long as it's covering the GPU, memory IC's and voltage regulation it's doing it's job.
