Multi media audio controller...problem

Ok well in my device manager it says a little icon with a question mark and under it a multi media audio controller icon with another question mark. And i cant hear any sound ,when i go search google there all for dell and stuff but mine is custom...please help me!

Computer info.

2.2 2400+ Xp amd athlon processor
1 Gb of ram
40 Gb hd + 80 Gb hd
256Mb 9600XT radeon saphire card
Sound card: CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device

is your computer OEM or you build it yourself?
If it's OEM, you may reinstall device from CD provided, while
your sound card is PCI, i think the only way is to find a similar driver to your sound controller
CMI8738,, is it Conexant module?

You need to install proper mobo drivers,, if its not onboard audio, then the proper audio drivers for that card,
