Need advice on upgrading

Hey guys,

My little brother has and old Dell latitude e6430 that school gave it to him (The reason he has to use it for his work and can not use his own). But the thing is quite slow on some more advanced tasks (autocad 3d drawing and similar).
He asked me to help him with upgrades, but I do not know much about laptops..
currently the thing is rocking
-i5-3340M clocked at 2.7Ghz. (BGA1023 socket).
-4 GB of DD3 ram.

So, could i7 3540M + 8GB of ram be a viable upgrade?
