News of Covid-19 vaccine with 90% effectiveness sees pandemic-boosted stocks tank

What just happened? News that a Covid-19 vaccine being developed by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech has proved 90 percent effective at preventing the virus is being welcomed by the world. The reveal has given stock markets a huge boost, but companies that benefitted from the pandemic have seen their shares plummet.

Both Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their mRNA-based vaccine had been shown to be effective at blocking the virus in 90 percent of participants in stage 3 of its clinical trial, which included 43,358 participants. The vaccine uses a two-dose process, and Pfizer says, “no serious safety concerns have been observed.” The company believes it can produce 50 million doses by the end of this year and up to 1.3 billion doses through 2021.

As per CNBC, to give you an idea of the importance of that 90 percent efficacy rate, scientists had been hoping for a vaccine that would be at least 75 percent effective. White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, meanwhile, had said 50 – 60 percent would be acceptable.

“I think we can see light at the end of the tunnel,” said Pfizer Chairman and CEO Dr. Albert Bourla on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

While Covid-19 has decimated industries such as aviation, theaters, and many non-grocery firms, stay-at-home orders have improved several companies’ bottom lines. With a potential vaccine on the horizon, the tables have turned: airlines, automotive, and cruise shares are just some of those on the rise, while video-conferencing service Zoom is down 13 percent, online-exercise giant Peloton is also down 13 percent, Etsy and Wayfair have dropped by double-digits, and even Amazon has fallen, by around 3 percent, the same as Shopify.

There’s still a long way to go, and there’s the question of how many people will be willing to take the vaccine, but it’s nice to hear some positive Covid-related news.

Must it be administered by your doctor or will you be able to get it at the Walmart Pharmacy like other vaccinations. Will it be paid for by the Govt. through Medicare or any other system?

I work for a first responder agency, and it's my understanding that at a minimum, health care professionals and first responders will get it free. And from internal communications I've seen from the CDC and FEMA that the intent is for the government to require all insurance plans to cover it for the general population. We'll see...

Natural immunity only last around 3 months. So have fun with that. These vaccines are mRNA-based, which means they should last longer than a natural immunity. A natural immunity is left-over t-cells that bind to their specific viruses, when the t-cells run out, so does your immunity. This mRNA vaccine makes your body continue to produce those t-cells even without the presence of the virus.

Big pharma on covid vaccine isn't about politics, it's about the first to announce so they can cash in. If they can substantiate their claims and vaccine trials 2 months ago, they would. Or last week. Or next week. Or next year. Per various experts at the beginning of the pandemic, they expected 18 months for the vaccine and said that was record speed for dev of a vaccine.

Watch all the media outlets start to focus less on numbers and more on medical advancements and progress being made. If the numbers of new infections and and deaths stay about the same and but the media coverage disappears, please come back and tell me I was right.

I can't say anything one way or another about the media as following any mass media is a colossal waste of time. However once the election buzz dies down, it'll be interesting to see how the current covid numbers are covered as new cases are at their highest and twice the previous peak around August. New deaths are "only" about 30% higher than the August peak, so the death rate is somewhat lower even though the overall number of covid deaths is also at it's highest.

Every person who takes the virus reduces the r-nought downward; I've seem some estimates as low as 40% for herd immunity. If true, and counting those already exposed, we may need less than 30% of the population to actually take the vaccine.

I predicted three months ago that the vaccine annoucement would be held up until after the election. Once the far Left began spreading fear and uncertainty over the vaccine, it was clear that manufacturers would have to wait for an annoucement, not through any political leanings of their own necessarily, but simply to keep their product from being tarred by association.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla denied this in a CNN interview, but the fact remains that their Phase III trial has been ongoing since July, with results continuously updated. There was no salient milestone reached on Sunday to trigger the Monday announcement, and they had enough data to meet the traditional two sigma reporting standard in Mid-October.
