Nikon today at CES unveiled its new flagship professional digital camera, the Nikon D5. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering Nikon tipped its development back in November but elected to save the details for its official unveiling.
Nikon's single-digit D series is the company's most coveted shooter and the D5 certainly doesn't disappoint. It's powered by an Expeed 5 image-processing engine and packs a 20.8-megapixel full-frame sensor with a native ISO range of 100 to 102,400 (expandable up to Hi 5 which is equivalent to ISO 3,280,000).
The D5 features a 153-point autofocus system, 4K video capture at up to 30p (3,840 x 2,160), a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second, USB 3.0 connectivity and a 3.2-inch touchscreen LCD. Two versions of the D5 will be offered: one with dual CompactFlash card slots and one with dual XQD slots.
Nikon also announced its entry into the action camera market with the KeyMission 360, a wearable action camera that can record true 360-degree video in 4K.
Nikon says the action cam features an image sensor and lens combination on two opposite sides; images from each are combined in the camera to create a single 360-degree image. The camera is said to be waterproof up to a depth of 30 meters and critically, doesn't require a separate housing to pull off the feat.
The Nikon D5 goes on sale this March priced at $6,500 for the body only while the KeyMission 360 will debut this spring.
