Solution for no sound drivers

Not sure if this will work for anyone else, but it worked for me.

I just got a freshly whiped Gateway notebook and had this same issue. I still had sound, but no drivers to control the sound (those loud windows beeps got anoying REAL fast). When I ran Gateway's D00377-002-001.exe setup it just laughed at me with a "FAILURE" message. So here's what I did:

1) Go to your device manager and remove the multimedia device with the yellow question mark next to it.
2) Reboot
3) When it tries to reinstall the driver, it will ask you where to find the drivers. Tell it you'll pick from an existing list.
4) Go to the Sound drivers and select Conexant AC-Link Audio
5) While trying to install, it will complain about not finding camc6aud.sys. Hit browse and point it to the cabs folder gateway created here: C:\cabs\D00377-002-001

That's it!

Note: this worked on my Gateway MX6437 Notebook, so it may not be exactly what you're dealing with.

Either the sound device has gone defective or gateway has some really poorly written drivers. It can either be one of those two things.

Audio & Modem fix for Gateway Laptop (Mar 2008)

I reinstalled a friend's Gateway laptop (MX6025) with WinXP and got the same issue with the audio and PC modem devices (yellow exclamation in device mgr). I tried Gateway's driver downloads only to receive the same failure or *nothing* happening when I run the installer. Here is the fix that worked for me (I'm sure it will work for other Gateways also because I was able to repeat the same fix on another Gateway laptop):

For the Gateway Audio Yellow Exclamation Mark issue (WinXP):
1. Control Panel, add hardware, next
2. "Yes, i've already connected the hardware", next
3. Scroll to the bottom of the list, choose "Add a new hardware device", next
4. "Install the hardware from a list", next
5. Choose "Sound, video and game controllers", next
6. Choose Intel, and then the Intel AC'97 Audio Controller
Yes, Gateway says it's a Conexant audio device... but hey, this worked for me, and Gateway sux. This same fix also worked on another Gateway laptop (diff model) with the same problem.

For the Gateway Modem Yellow Exclamation Mark Issue (WinXP):
1. Go here: dubdubdubdotconexant.com/support/md_driverassistance.h t m l
2. Download the XP zip files (all 3 under the HSF section)
3. Extract the zip files to a folder on your desktop
4. Use device mgr to "Update Driver..." for the modem and browse to one of the
folders you just extracted (it ends up installing an Intel driver for the modem)
and it worked just fine (tested/confirmed working)

Chipset Drivers

Try to go to the manufacturers website and look for the Chipset Drivers and see if they have them for XP. Chipset Drivers are based on your hardware and how it interacts with the operating system. Keep in mind that not all hardware designed for VISTA is compatible with XP.

NoShoreBall advice: Right Click the audio device in Device Mgr and uninstall it before you follow these steps:
