Looks to be a well prepared guide Crinkles. If changing settings goes pear shaped things can go from bad to worse. Hopefully it'll work for the poster. The only issues I've had with wireless connection relate to printers and hard wiring is my first choice there.

I hope it does work. I've had about the same experience wireless always works. I broke one USB adapter a few years ago, accidentally knocked the cap off and that pulled a wire or two loose from the PCB. $15 for a replacement. NBD!
