Nvidia could slash GeForce RTX 5000 GPU production by up to 30% to boost AI chip output

Rumor mill: Nvidia is reportedly set to make a move many feared would happen: slash production of gaming GPUs in order to increase the number of AI chips it makes. The claim states that up to 30% of RTX 5000 GPU production in China will be cut as Team Green focuses on its biggest money-maker, a change that could exacerbate the supply issues and high prices that have plagued Blackwell gaming cards from the beginning.

According to a post on the Chinese Board Partners forums, which was reposted on X by insider @Jukenlosreve, Nvidia is going to cut production of its GeForce RTX 50 series by 20-30% so it can focus production on the GB20, the upcoming China-exclusive B40 (or B30), and GB300 AI chips.

According to the post, production lines for the GB200 are at full capacity, and the GB300 is expected to enter mass production by the end of 2025.

It's likely that slashing production would make the global issues that Blackwell gaming cards are facing even worse, with cards way over MSRP and inventories usually non-existent. The timing of the cuts would be particularly bad, as things do seem to be improving – in the UK and parts of the Europe, some RTX 5090 models were available for slightly less than MSRP and in stock.

It's no secret that Nvidia's dominance of the advanced AI hardware industry is what briefly made it the world's most valuable company last week. The tech giant's data center segment generated $39.1 billion in the previous quarter, while gaming brought in $3.8 billion, more than 90% less.

Ironically, Nvidia's gaming revenue actually saw its fastest growth rate in years during the quarter, up 42% year-over-year and 48% quarter-over-quarter, beating Wall Street's expectations by over 30%. However, it still accounted for just 8.5% of Nvidia's total revenue.

All non-verified posts about Nvidia's plans should be taken with a dose of salt, of course, but it's long been feared that the company will start putting even more focus on its lucrative AI products at the expense of gaming GPUs.

According to the latest Steam survey, the RTX 5000 series, which has been called the worst architecture launch in years, is starting to make its way into more gamers' PCs. Four of the top ten-best performing cards in May were Blackwells, and the RTX 5070 Ti just entered the main chart.

Nah. There’s a surge of activity around AI now - large companies pouring out billions, and they’ve made around 0 on it so far. They can’t keep pumping in cash for years if there’s no wide adoptation outside of ChatGPT and DeepSeek. I have CoPilot + at work and it royally sucks compared to ChatGPT
Yeah, AI is very much at the "This is kinda cool.....but what actual value does this have for our business" stage, the costs are ramping up and up and there are signs working on efficiency is better, so we are at that point where the bubble is getting pretty stretched and might pop in the next year or two

I believe Nvidia's response to the gaming community will be along the lines of : "this is a 'YOU' problem"

If the 5000 series was really overpriced, no one would be buying them... Don't blame a company for saying, "I'd rather see a $5000 margin instead of a $500 margin"...

It's starting to look like the future of PC gaming will depend more on how much AI doesn’t need, rather than what gamers actually want. Scarcity-driven price hikes aren’t a glitch in the system—they’re becoming the business model.

We're watching a company outgrow its original fanbase, and it’s not clear if that fanbase is coming along for the ride or getting left at the station.

They're speeding away in a bullet train after setting the station on fire with the fanbase still in it.

I have a feeling we're going to see a future of things like APUs and maybe Intels redemption Arc(pun intended) is on the GPU side of things, not the CPU side.

Intel has their own fabs and could produce GPUs at a lower price than either nVidia or AMD if they really wanted to. Chips might be larger and more power hungry, but without having to worry about TSMCs margins before their own, Intel could compete very well in the $ per FPS category.

Someone with a brain unlike the previous post.

well they already lost me a few years ago, I'm paying very close attention to what AMD and Intel do now, because in truth with prices being what they are less and less people can afford the hobby, this is why cards like GTX 1070 that are 9 years old are still viable, because it costs to much for the average person.

Yeah, lets make it even more expensive that it is. The last few years every NVidia product I have bought makes me feel like I need to take a shower after buying it (Cause I know I just got screwed).

Honestly, I couldn't care less if they abandoned PC gaming entirely except for the fact AMD could not take up the slack and Intel is not capable of providing a true alternative.

I have one old PC using 2080 Super and as soon as I get the 9070XT, my other PC's 6800XT will replace the 2080 and that will be that, no Nvidia or Intel products in my house.

Well - you should care. Do you think AMD would’ve set a 600 USD MSRP on the 9070 XT without Nvidia? Take away Nvidia and that MSRP would’ve been 1000 USD.
We need competition - Intel is currently only making entry level cards, they’re not ready to compete with AMD in the mid/high-end market

Ne-gaTive. Alphabet's mission lies in developing an Encyclopedia Humanica, and AI and all its use gets recorded and logged and when necessary implemented. Plus, AI ain't about makin money - BUT MAKE MONEY GO A-WAAY.
