Nvidia is one of the few companies in the Android ecosystem that promises to update their products promptly and support them well after their launch. So it's no surprise that the company has begun rolling out Android 6.0 'Marshmallow' to the Shield Tablet K1, ahead of many competing tablets on the market.

The version of Android 6.0 that is now available on the Shield Tablet K1 packs no surprises. Nvidia touts four main additions to the software – Now on Tap, Adoptable Storage, Improved App Permissions, and App Standby – which all part of Android 6.0 itself.

On top of that, Nvidia says users can expect a few minor improvements, such as updates to the camera app that bring burst functionality and real-time HD image effects. The interface has also been upgraded with new wallpapers, the ability to personalize the quick settings menu, and an option to launch Google Now voice commands from the lockscreen.

Android 6.0 launched on Google's Nexus devices around two months ago, but since then, few devices from third-party companies have been updated. To see the Shield Tablet K1 get updated so quickly is great for owners, and continues Nvidia's excellent track record for providing updates as promised.

Unfortuantely Android 6.0 isn't available just yet for owners of Nvidia's older Shield Tablet. There are only a few minor differences between the Shield Tablet K1 and the Shield Tablet, with Nvidia essentially relaunching the Tablet as the Tablet K1 last month at a new $199 price point. Nvidia hasn't revealed when the older Shield Tablet will get the update, but hopefully it's not too far off.

Nvidia rocks. I have the old tegra note 7 tablet (made under licence from Nvidia) that came with android 4.1. Since then it's had 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, and 5.1. Only Nexus products get this many updates, eat your heart out Samsung!
