PayPal launches Facebook app, send friends money

Mega online payment provider, Paypal, has conjured up a Facebook application which allows Facebook users to send money to their friends. As long as the funds come directly from your bank account or Paypal balance, there are no additional fees. The company has posted what amounts to a press release on their blog.

The plainly named application, Send Money, may be a way for Paypal to harbor some good will for the holidays. The application allows you to send money as a gift to any of your Facebook friends. Included with that gift is a personalized, electronic greeting which gets posted on the recipient's Facebook wall. The greeting itself is optional while your personal message and gift amount are kept just between the two of you. 

Leveraging Facebook, a service with 800 million users, sounds like a good way for Paypal to publicize itself. In order to accept the money, recipients must either have or create a Paypal account. So, in order to receive their gift, reluctant users who were once luke-warm to the prospect of Paypal may actually warm up to the idea once they go through the steps of creating an account. Smart.

Here's how it works, according to Paypal:

You can send a card with money or just send money.

To send a card with money:

1. Choose a card and personalize it with a message or a photo or a video
2. Choose who to send the card to from your list of Facebook contacts
3. Enter the amount of money you want to send
4. Login to PayPal to complete the payment. If you don't have a PayPal account, it takes a few minutes to sign up for one.
5. After your payment is complete, your card is sent.
6. The card is posted on the receiver's wall and an email message is sent. PayPal will also send a separate payment notification to the receiver.

To just send money without a card:

1. Enter the amount of money you want to send
2. Login to PayPal to complete the payment. If you don't have a PayPal account, it takes a few minutes to sign up for one.
3. After your payment is complete, your notification is sent.
4. A notification is posted on the receiver's wall and an email message is sent. PayPal will also send a separate payment notification to the received.

Google Wallet and the now deprecated Google Checkout made news recently, but Google has been quiet on whether or not will be launching a similar application to rival Paypal. You can add the Send Money application to your Facebook account here.

Hence why you can do this on facebook now. Facebook has your email address, so paypal can send money to this address.

I don't know I just think its kind of pointless when I can just use someone email address on paypal. Besides facebook gets hacked a lot I wouldn't trust it.

it's true that I won't be using facebook apps, especially when money is involved...
I've heard countless accounts being hacked. Some of you might even know about the fire sheep?

I prefer to keep my paypal account and facebook account separate, never once I ever think of joining them both. I even keep different password for both of them

Besides facebook gets hacked a lot I wouldn't trust it.

That was my very first thought when I saw the thread title.

I guess the real question is how secure Pay-pal is?

Its not that Paypal is secure, its the users who has the problem.

I don't think anyone is interested in putting their money in a website that got hacked and had pornography and animal abuse on it, while they can't figure out why it got hacked. Instead of releasing a way to trade money over this Wild wild west, why don't they try and put some order in it first? I think they are starting to get ahead of themselves.

PayPal offers this service and has for a few years directly thru Paypal. It is nothing new. You cant just use a friends email to send money. You have to have the email and password of the paypal account that is sending the money. You have to log in first.

You can send directly to a friend simply by sending it to their email address. So I if you already have a friends info you cant be daft enough to send money from his account to a Facebook user. They will track it and do this on every purchase.

Facebook is not a very secure site. However PayPal is. Doesnt mean it cant be hacked. If you want to send money log out of Faceook and close your browser. Then Log into Paypal and send it to your friend directly.
