It just seems that recently the PC has been bogging down more and more. I also did a kaspersky online scan, and got these results.

Why would he remove his anti-virus protection? Please post the log as requested in your next post

First, I don't know exactly what do you mean by "post the log as requested" ?

As for AVG (ver.8 in particular):
I was a big fan of AVG for quite a long time till just yesterday when I found that scanning about 10 GB was taking more than two hours and still not half way yet.

I didn't suspect AVG, but rather my first guess was the PC or the drive (it's a bit old IBM with Win2K). After a couple of tests, I found AVG was normally OK for almost all kind of files except PDF. Just scanning a folder with 30 PDF files took over 2 min. !! (not really sure if other types of files also slow)

Again, I didn't suspect AVG, so I did the test on my laptop; powerful with XP, and I found the same thing with PDF.

At that point, I turned to the internet (actually, I got here from Google searching for "slow AVG PDF" words which all in this thread)

But before I got here, I found many other pages and complains about AVG 8 in general (not exactly PDF) .. very long scan time, slow browsing, system crash, slowing PC in general .. etc (do the search and see)

After that, I remembered that just last week I setup XP on an old laptop for a friend.
And as usual, the first thing after I get the desktop is to install AVG, then Win update and the rest. After that I found the PC is extremely slow. This was my first time to setup XP with only 128 MB ram and I thought that was the reason and advised my friend to add more ram.

Going back to scanning issue, just for a test, I removed AVG and installed Avira. And I set it up to scan ALL files (not only infectables) ...No comparison !!

The old IBM PC above (about 214,000 files) completes scan in just 22 min.
On my laptop, a drive with over 1.3 million files completes in 1 hr, 9 min (attached pic)

From the info I found in the internet about the difference between AVG ver 7.x and ver.8, now I think AVG8 is also the reason for the slow performance on my friend's laptop.. and so the owner of this thread.

Finally, I may not explicitly wrote it, but my point was to try something else for a test (based on my finding) !!
And if the issue is not directly related to online functions, but rather slow PC in general, so he can do the following:

1. Download another antivirus (naturally, I recommend Avira, but I heard Avast is also good)
2. Disconnect from the internet.
3. Full scan the PC with AVG and note how long the scan will take.
4. Remove AVG and note the PC performance
5. Install the new antivirus
6. Full scan the PC again and note how long the new scan will take and also note the PC performance.
7. Decide if AVG has a relation with slowing the PC or not.

I hope it's clear.
