PNY attached thumb drive doesn't show up

Sorry for another one of these threads but I can't really seem to find the answer I need in any other thread. My specific situation is this:
My wife's PNY thumb drive suddenly stopped working. I know she's often just unplug it without the "Safe to Remove" prompt. Now the drive does not shoe up anywhere (disk mgmgt, my comp., etc)
When plugged in, the light comes on briefly, but then goes out. I can't even see it as a drive to format or try to run a recovery program.
Tried on several different PCs, OSs etc. Same thing each time.
My question is this: I am figuring that there is not much I can do. But a local shop told me they can extract the data for $100+. Can it really be done, or is all her data gone with the wind?
 
Yes the pen drive is toast. Never depend on saving important data only on a flash drive. Back up the data to a CD or DVD. Flash drives are subject to static discharges like any electronic device. CD's and DVD's are not...
