Setting out to build faster build for a friend of mine, we did a quick cost comparison.
Assumptions:
  • PC will be built once inventory levels stabilize after first of the year
  • CPU's will not be overclocked Cryorig M9a/I
  • There will be no gaming on machine, strictly work-related only 1080p resolution
  • All other components will be the same: case, ps, memory ddr4-2666, SSDs
  • Video card used for Ryzen, Nvidia GT 1030
What we found with current pricing:

Yes, we know that 8400 comes with a fan, using Intel HSF, not going to happen.

Was really shocked how close the over-clockable i5 was to the 1600x in the overall price although we could go with cheaper AM4 board obviously, the one chosen for features was $120.

Thoughts? Comments?

IMO, never OC a business machine - - you want reliability over arbitrary performance.

Unless there is a use that warrants more processing power, the i5-8400 is plenty sufficient for office work. Writing emails and using point and click software will run pretty much identically on all of the above.
