Realtek AC 97 Audio Driver Outdated

The current driver for my Realtek AC 97 Audio card in my computer is version 5.10.0.5250 dated 6/19/2003. I am experiencing some sound quality issues. Is it safe for me to replace the old driver with your Realtek AC 97 ALC650 Audio CODECs Driver A4.06 for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003 (32/64 bits)? My computer is an emachines using the home edition (32 bits) of Windows XP.
