Reddit now requires UK users to upload a selfie or ID to access adult content

This makes things worse - such as an increase in rape, prostitution and STDs as online porn stops generating income for people and also does not satisfy your husband or son anymore in their time of strong chemical/biological need. Do you want your husband or son to check porn secretly, or do you prefer he secretly hooks up with a hooker?

This solves the wrong problem and it solves it the wrong way. The goal of protecting children online has NOT been achieved by this. They may now also go to sites that have even less moderation, with more extreme/harmful content.
Hard disagree the instances of that type of behavior increased as access did

Good then, buy your porn at a different location—I have no problem with that. Laws have always said that you need to be 18 and show an ID to buy it when you're looking at physical media; there is no reason the internet should have been treated differently, zero at all. And you're right—social media should also be restricted, so should violent content. Right now, you can go watch an R-rated movie at 12 as long as you watch it on the internet—that needs to be put a stop to as well. It's time the Wild West days of the internet got some laws.

And you know what ?The fact that these sites have to constantly scan etc to make sure that there's no minors in the videos because they get caught all the time. As well as make sure that there's nobody trafficked being uploaded which happens all the time, makes me basically have zero sympathy for the side owners they should get real jobs not profit off of the exploitation of others because a whole lot of that content that they host is created in third world countries and uploaded through coercion. I have no sympathy of every last one of them goes out of business.

-Nah, we don't need more nanny state. More government regulation and intervention is not the solution to the problem.

The most terrifying words anyone can hear are "I'm from the government and I'm here to help".

This solution will be used to collect data on Americans and slowly be rolled out to other "undesirable" forms of entertainment and thought under the guise of "protecting kids".

The solution here is creating a culture where parents feel comfortable telling their kids "no".

No, you cannot have a smart phone.

No, you cannot have a social media account.

No, you cannot just sit online unsupervised all day.

It will reap benefits beyond whatever easily defeated (by the kids) government control mechanism is put in place and result in actual cultural rewards for all of us.

It would Make America Great Again.

Until the 1950s pornography was underground and you can't argue that the world prior was not a much happier better place. Yeah there was some flaws but honestly the collapse of society and the degenerate behavior and the general of moral attitudes came about the late '50s and early '60s and I'm only continued under this day to completely devalue anything with any sort of moral center. No we need to return to the standards of our forefathers you know when things like school shootings were rare when divorce rates were low. That's what is so deeply needed we need to just press the delete button on the internet in general

I disagree with your absolute hard-line stance with parenting GodisanAtheist but some of your ideas still carry merit. Severe restrictions don't benefit the parent or the child. There are short and long term consequences as a result. Those decisions can have a negative impact.

The 'parent' aspect shouldn't fall on any government - that responsibility should fall on the parent. We don't need more intrusive methods that allow anyone including the government to monitor and easily categorize everything we do in our lives. Technology like parental controls are useful but they can be abused either way in the wrong hands.

candle86 your disillusioned thinking that problems didn't exist prior to that era. On the contrary they existed but relative to population size and they were either swept under the carpet or kept hush hush 🤫 Certain issues that have been happening in society now have happened for centuries. I can only fathom you crawled out from under some rock and don't actually know what the Internet is.

-The world became safer, richer, smarter, and more open from 1950's until now.

Life before the 1950's would have been generally hellish by modern standards, with many children dying of easily treatable diseases etc.

The worst school killing in US history happened in 1920 when a man detonated a bomb at a school and killed 38 children.

You sound like the kind of person who is ok banning all nuts because some kids have allergies. Have to keep those kids safe at the expense of everyone else right?

You know what I am is fine with establishing morality codes to keep us as a moral civilized society. You will never convince me that we need to make pornography easily accessible and available it should be criminal. And anybody saying that a teenager has the right to do this should be charged as a pedophile you want to willingly groom teenagers you are a predator. There is no middle ground on this and if you think p*** should be available to teenagers you are no different than Jeffrey Epstein plain and simple.

And while sure there was societal problems nothing at all like today The societal problems we have today weren't possible back then because we still enforce morality our society was a moral one. You stripped mandatory morality from society and this is what you get it's time to walk back that stupid decision.

- I'm fine with a morality code too, but I'm not ok with a legally enforced morality code. American Sharia doesn't sound appealing to me in the least.

I am not trying to convince anyone that pornography has to be easily accessible, I do not want kids and minors exposed to porn and as someone who actually has kids I walk the walk not just spout off on the internet.

I'm against big brother coming in and demanding papers please is the wrong solution to this problem. If a parent starts in on some exasperated BS about their precious baby being a smartphone/social media/porn addict or whatever they need to be confronted and reminded that they're parents and they're failing their children instead of just going along with it.

Make Shame Great Again

No need to get the gubmint and the cops involved, like the good old days.

As technology increases, privacy decreases. Get used to it. The laws are not in sync with human behavior. For example, ever since we have had the WWW, many young ladies were uploading n*des for profit. For many, it was illegal, because they were still children. Indeed, some children became convicted sex offenders for uploading their own pictures. Is that what we want? Wouldn't it better to try to handle this in a more respectable fashion. If you catch your kid w*nking, are going to call the police, or would it better to talk it over with them? While some morality laws have the intended effect, we are getting to a place where the laws are worse than the behavior they govern. A rude and crude government can do very little at great expense.
