Rhode Island Representative wants to tax violent video games

Why ignorance?

I just thought your calling for a 10% tax on guns was quite illustrative of your lack of knowledge (the definition of ignorance) concerning the 10%/11% on guns that already exists.

To answer Your second question: US is such a big influence on rest of the world, that some dumb decisions made by Your lawmakers may hit the rest of us with a ricochet. Pun intended, although the topic is rather morbid.

I don't know about most laws, but US gun laws are most certainly not influential on most other countries. There are not many countries in the developed world that have as liberal (in the classic use of the word, as in liberty) gun laws. Switzerland being probably the only one. If our lawmakers are making such "dumb" decisions, the results should be excellent evidence to use in effecting change in your country.

To be honest, it's really annoying citizens of other countries, especially Europeans, constantly want to involve themselves in our politics. Most Americans couldn't care less about European politics. It's quite clear that Americans and Europeans value things differently. Americans value liberty, even at the sake of some security. Europeans value security at the sake of some liberty. (Edit for clarity: By security I mean both financially and physically.) Not every country has to be the same. Why does European care so much that we are different?

BTW, I think you and I agree on the video game tax. It's just a dumb, knee-jerk reaction by some blow hard politician.

Either way, I appreciate the discussion.

I meant more of a freedom of speech limiting laws, like taxing VG in 21century, in the era of internet. How is He going to tax them in Rhode Island? Unless He plans to tax them globally? Germans, Australians and member of Arabic states got some limits on brutal and sexually explicit games. So average German, Australian or muslim either plays castrated artistic visions of a VG developer or buys them outside their country online.

To be honest, it's really annoying citizens of other countries...
Trust Me, our fates are intermingled. When Canada was to sign trade agreement with EU, I've read of backslash it was getting from US groups. When US tried to push ACTA in EU, people in EU went out to streets expecting that soon American media moguls will be shutting independent media outlets in EU, and people here will be spied on legally by NSA and extradited and prosecuted by American prosecutors for copyright infridgement. After centuries of secrecy Swiss banks finally gave up on bank privacy concerning American citizens. And as funny as it sounds, My bank, DB, wanted Me to take a day off work and go down to their local office to sign a document that I'm not a US citizen, although I never even applied for a US visa (because of some US law tracking US tax evaders?). Retarded, but true.

Either way, I appreciate the discussion.
Likewise. Lets agree to disagree.

What about Hollywood's violent movies/shows? Why single out one form of violent media? The source of the problem is not with the games, movies, or the weapon used. There are many contributing factors, in my opinion, and its shallow to point to one thing and place so much blame upon it. We need to place the sole blame of a mass shooting, on the one who made the decision to harm others. I personally wish a gun was used by whomever, to stop the guy in Florida before he murdered so many kids in a "gun free zone". I love people and own plenty of guns and I would never want to use one against anyone unless I could stop a bad person from harming others.

Another thread,lol,

Nothing wrong with gun control ,as long as it targets the correct, peoples. violent games have zero to do with violence in the real world,

get rid of poverty. teach the children well. stop censoring what they do, read, and see.enforce proper family values ,starting at a very young age.

that is one sinister smile .

There's no such thing as an 'assault rifle'. This is a term made up by the anti-2A forces several years ago to make the rifles sound scary. Rifles, like the AR-15, are no different than run of the mill rifles. The only difference is that they have bolt-on cosmetic parts and are usually painted black or camo. That's it.

All civilian-grade rifles, like the AR-15, fire only one shot per trigger pull. ONLY actual military rifles may have user-selectable semi or full-auto firing. These are not available to the general public without a very special license & background check from the govt.

Calling any civilian rifle an 'assault rifle' is like calling a normal car a dragster because someone bolted on a spoiler and ground effects package.

Video games don't kill people, guns do. I'm no US citizen but what makes Second Amendment more important than First Amendment? Why not add 10% to every gun sold in US? Video games cost anywhere from $1 up to few thousand dollars in the case of pay-to-win titles like StarWarsBattlefornt 2. Assault rifle's price starts at few thousand dollars. It's only logical You will make more money from taxing guns?

what a brilliant idea, because the war on drugs has been sooooo effective lol, I mean it's not like we spent $3T on the war on drugs and the Cartels are now so wealthy even the god damn government can't stop them and everyone literally everyone who wants a drug can get it, for cheap. follow the latest Heroin epidemic caused by FDA putting new restrictions on the perscribing of Opoid narcotics? Turns out that Heroin is actually cheaper than the Opoid pain killers. so many great examples of banning success stories.

LoL these comments. :)
Why don't we tax retard politicans? I guess the income would be higher than aggressive video games, guns and alcohol combined....

Politicians tax 95%
Guns tax 500%

You'll solve problem overnight.

How USA can even pretend to be civilized country when population has 50x more weapons than US military itself.

NRA retarded outburst I've watched just underline the core problem of mental health. Give teachers, professors, CEOs and whoever else at least (per person) 5 M1A1 Abrams tanks, minimum 3 Apache copters, one nuclear submarine, 2 infrantry divisions, Marine brigade, squadron of B1B bombers. Oh of course let's not forget about additional sniper rifles, grenades and stuff. Everybody should be protected in the USA. It almost seems like underlying motto of US constitution is phrase: Kill them all! And so you should. In next 100 years Canadian-Mexican border will stretch from San Francisco to Virginia Beach.

Seriously... get a grip people or you'll murder yourself to a man...

Video games and cannabis make people violent.

Bullshit... it makes people chill out, both of them... Cannabis especially... Guns aren't the problem, Video games aren't the problem, Cannabis isn't the problem... Mental health issues being swept under the rug for years is the problem. Alcohol is also an issue, it DOES make people violent, so do Opioids and all the **** the pharmaceutical companies are making these days.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, a bunch of ******* American realtors and financiers sold tons of awful, sub-prime mortgages to people on low incomes who would never repay them. This, coupled with the piss-poor setup of the global financial system, led to the biggest financial depression since the 1920s/30s. What happens in America, the richest country on the planet, affects the rest of the world. Like it or not, people are going to comment on what goes on.
